175:1
CAp.
CHAPTER I. — I remember that I promised, venerable Emperor, in the cause of the faith, concerning which I know your clemency to be piously solicitous, that a fuller discourse of my humility should be directed to you; which now, with the Lord's help, I discharge on a faithful occasion, so that instruction useful to the holy zeal of your piety may not, so far as I judge, be wanting. For although I know that your clemency has no need of human instructions, and has drawn a most sincere doctrine from the abundance of the Holy Spirit, yet it is my office both to make plain what you understand and to proclaim what you believe: so that that fire which the Lord, coming, cast upon the earth (Luke 12:49), stirred by the movement of frequent meditation, may so grow warm that it burns, and so be kindled that it gives light.
175:2
I, 5), imperitorum oculos tentavit avertere. Cumque ipsa in suam reciderit cæcitatem, nunc in discipulis recrudescit, quod in auctore defecit. CAP. II.
For the Eutychian heresy has striven to bring great darkness upon the regions of the East, and has attempted to turn away the eyes of the unlearned from that light which, as the Gospel says, shines in the darkness, and the darkness comprehended it not (John 1:5). And although it has fallen back into its own blindness, now in its disciples it breaks out afresh what failed in its author. CHAPTER II. — For at no long interval of time was the catholic faith, which is singular and true, and to which nothing can be added, nothing taken away, assailed by two enemies: of whom the former, Nestorius, and the latter, Eutyches, emerged, who wished to bring upon the Church of God two heresies contrary to one another:
175:3
ut uterque a praedicatoribus veritatis merito damnaretur, quia insanum nimis et sacrilegum fuit quod varia falsitate ambo senserunt. Anathematizeturergo Nestorius, qui beatam Virginem Mariam non Dei, sed hominis tantummodo crediditgenitricem,ut aliam personam carnis faceret, aliam Deitatis; nec unum Christum in 1357 Verbo Dei et carne sentiret, sed separatim atque sejunctimalterum Filium Dei, alterum hominis prædicaret;
以致兩人都理當被真理的宣講者所定罪,因為他們二人在其種種謬妄中所持守的乃是極其瘋狂與褻瀆之事。因此,願聶斯托留受咒詛,他相信蒙福的童貞女馬利亞不是神的母親,而僅是一個人的母親,從而使肉體成為一個位格、神性成為另一個位格;他不認在神的道與肉體中有一位基督,反倒分開而割裂地宣揚一位是神的兒子、另一位是人的兒子;
so that each was justly condemned by the preachers of truth, because what both held in their various falsehood was exceedingly mad and sacrilegious. Let Nestorius therefore be anathematized, who believed the blessed Virgin Mary to be the mother not of God but only of a man, so as to make one person of the flesh, another of the Deity; and did not perceive one Christ in the Word of God and the flesh, but separately and disjointedly proclaimed one Son of God, another son of man;
175:4
I, 43)? Eutyches quoque eodem percellatur anathemate, qui per impios veterum haereticorum volutatus errores, tertium Apollinaris dogma delegit:
whereas, while that immutable essence of the Word remained, which is timeless and coeternal to Him with the Father and with the Holy Spirit, the Word so became flesh within the virginal womb that, through an ineffable mystery, by one conception and one birth, according to the truth of each nature, the same Virgin was both the handmaid and the mother of the Lord. Which Elizabeth also, as Luke the evangelist declares, understood and said: 'Whence is this to me, that the Mother of my Lord should come to me' (Luke 1:43)? Let Eutyches also be smitten with the same anathema, who, rolled about through the impious errors of the ancient heretics, chose the third dogma of Apollinaris:
175:5
so that, denying the truth of human flesh and soul, he asserted that our whole Lord Jesus Christ was of one nature, as though the Deity of the Word had itself converted itself into flesh and soul; and that to be conceived and born, to be nourished and to grow, to be crucified and to die, to be buried and to rise again, and to ascend into heaven, and to sit at the right hand of the Father, whence He shall come to judge the living and the dead, belonged to the divine essence alone, which receives none of these things in itself without the truth of flesh: since the nature of the Only-begotten is the nature of the Father, is the nature of the Holy Spirit, and is at once impassible, at once immutable — the undivided unity and consubstantial equality of the everlasting Trinity.
175:6
Whence, if any Eutychian departs from the perversity of Apollinaris, lest he be convicted of holding the Deity to be passible and mortal — and yet dares to pronounce one nature of the incarnate Word, that is, of the Word and the flesh — he manifestly passes over into the madness of Valentinus and Manichaeus, and believes that the mediator of God and men, the man Jesus Christ, did all things in mere semblance, and that not a human body in Him, but a phantom appearance of a body, appeared to the eyes of the beholders. CHAPTER III.
175:7
— Since the catholic faith has long detested these lies of impiety, and the sacrileges of such assertions were long ago condemned throughout the whole world by the concordant judgments of the blessed Fathers, there is no doubt that it preaches and defends this faith which the holy Synod of Nicaea confirmed, saying: 'We believe in one God the Father almighty, maker of things visible and invisible. And in one Lord our Jesus Christ, the Son of God, born the Only-begotten of the Father, that is, of the substance of the Father, God of God, light of light, true God of true God, born, not made, of one substance with the Father (which the Greeks call homoousion), through whom all things were made, both those which are in heaven and those which are on earth.'
175:8
'Who for us and for our salvation came down, was made incarnate, and was made man, suffered, and rose again on the third day. He ascended into heaven, and is to come to judge the living and the dead. And in the Holy Spirit.' In which profession there is most evidently contained what we too confess and believe concerning the incarnation of the Lord, who, in order to reform the salvation of the human race, did not bring down with Him from heaven the true flesh of our frailty, but assumed it in the womb of the Virgin mother. CHAPTER IV.
175:9
— Whoever therefore are so blinded and so alien from the light of truth as to deny to the Word of God, from the time of the incarnation, the truth of human flesh, let them show in what they claim for themselves the Christian name, and by what reasoning they agree with the Gospel of truth, if either flesh without Deity or Deity without flesh arose from the birth of the blessed Virgin. For just as it cannot be denied, since the evangelist says, that the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us (John 1:14), so it cannot be denied, since Paul the apostle preaches, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world to Himself (2 Cor. 5:19). But what reconciliation could there be, by which God might be made propitious to the human race, unless the mediator of God and men took up the cause of all?
175:10
But by what reasoning could He fulfill the truth of a mediator, unless He who in the form of God is equal to the Father were in the form of a servant also a partaker of us: so that the bond of death, contracted by the transgression of one, might be loosed by the death of one who alone owed nothing to death? For the shedding of the blood of Christ for the unjust was so rich in ransom that, if the whole company of the captives should believe in their redeemer, no chains of the devil would retain any of them: since, as the Apostle says, where sin abounded, grace did much more abound (Rom. 5:20). And when those born under the prejudgment of sin received the power of being reborn to righteousness, the gift of liberty was made stronger than the debt of servitude. CHAPTER V.
175:11
Quam itaque sibi in hujus sacramenti praesidio spem relinquunt qui in Salvatore nostro neganthumani corporis veritatem?Dicant quo sacrificio renonciHati; dicant quo sanguine sint redempti?
— What hope, then, do they leave for themselves in the safeguard of this mystery, who deny the truth of a human body in our Savior? Let them say by what sacrifice they were reconciled; let them say by what blood they were redeemed. Who is it, as the Apostle says, that gave Himself for you, an oblation and a victim to God for an odor of sweetness (Eph. 5:2)? Or what sacrifice was ever more holy than that which the true and eternal High Priest laid upon the altar of the cross by the immolation of His own flesh? For although the death of many saints was precious in the sight of the Lord (Ps. 116:15), yet the slaying of no innocent one was the redemption of the world.
175:12
Dequibusipsedicebat: Cam exaUatus fuero aterra, omnia traham ad me (Joan. XII, 32). Fides etenim verajustificans impios, et creansjustos, ad bumanitatis suae tracta participem, in illo acquirit saIutem, in quo solo homo se invenit innocentem:
The just received crowns, they did not give them; and from the fortitude of the faithful were born examples of patience, not gifts of righteousness. For single deaths were suffered by single men, nor did any one pay another's debt by his own end: since among the sons of men one alone, our Lord Jesus Christ, stood forth, who was truly the immaculate Lamb, in whom all were crucified, all died, all were buried, all were also raised up. Of whom He Himself said: 'When I am lifted up from the earth, I will draw all things to myself' (John 12:32). For true faith, which justifies the impious and creates the just, drawn to a partaker of His humanity, acquires salvation in Him in whom alone man finds himself innocent:
175:13
liberum habens per gratiam Dei de ejus potentia gloriari,qui contrahostem humani generis in carnis nostrae humilitate congressus, his victoriam suam tribuit, in quorum corpore triumphavit. CAP. VI.
having it free, through the grace of God, to glory in the power of Him who, engaging in the humility of our flesh against the enemy of the human race, bestowed His victory upon those in whose body He triumphed. CHAPTER VI. — Although therefore in the one Lord Jesus Christ, the true Son of God and of man, there is one person of the Word and of the flesh, which inseparably and undividedly has its common actions, yet the qualities of the works themselves are to be understood; and it must be discerned, by the contemplation of sincere faith, to what things the humility of the flesh is advanced, and to what the loftiness of the Deity inclines: what it is that the flesh does not do without the Word, and what the Word does not effect without the flesh.
175:14
For without the power of the Word the Virgin would neither conceive nor bring forth, and without the truth of the flesh the infant would not lie wrapped in swaddling clothes. Without the power of the Word the Magi would not adore the child, declared by the guiding star; and without the truth of the flesh the child would not be commanded to be carried into Egypt and withdrawn from the persecution of Herod. Without the power of the Word the voice of the Father sent from heaven would not say: 'This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased' (Matt. 3:17); and without the truth of the flesh John would not testify: 'Behold the Lamb of God, behold Him who takes away the sins of the world' (John 1:29). Without the power of the Word there would be no restoration of the weak and quickening of the dead, and without the truth of the flesh neither would food be necessary for the fasting, nor sleep for the weary.
175:15
Postremo eine Verbi potentia non se Dominus Patri profiteretur aequalem, et sine veritate carnis non idem diceret Patrem se esse majorem (Joan. xiv, 28): cu m catholica fides utrumque suscipiat, utrumque defendat, quae secundum confessionom beati apostoli Petri, unum Christum Dei vivi Filium (Matth. xvj, 16), et hominem credit, et Verbum. Quamvis itaque ab illo initio, quo in utero Virginis Verbum caro 1369 factum est (Joan. I, 14), nihil umquam inter utramque formam divisionis exstiterit, et per omnia incrementacorporea unius persona: fuerint totius temporis actiones;
最後,若無道的能力,主便不會自稱與父同等,而若無肉體的真實,同一位便不會說父比祂更大(約翰福音十四章28節):而大公信仰兼受二者、兼護二者,這信仰按照蒙福使徒彼得的宣認,相信獨一的基督、永生神的兒子(馬太福音十六章16節)既是人、又是道。因此,雖然自那道在童貞女胎中成為肉身的起頭(約翰福音一章14節),二形之間從無任何分割存在,且經歷一切身體的增長,全部時間的作為都屬於一個位格;
Lastly, without the power of the Word the Lord would not profess Himself equal to the Father, and without the truth of the flesh the same would not say that the Father was greater than He (John 14:28): whereas the catholic faith receives both, defends both, which, according to the confession of blessed the apostle Peter, believes the one Christ, the Son of the living God (Matt. 16:16), to be both man and the Word. Although therefore from that beginning in which the Word was made flesh in the womb of the Virgin (John 1:14), no division at any time existed between the two forms, and through all the bodily increases the actions of the whole time were of one person;
175:16
yet those very things which were done inseparably we in no way confound by any mingling, but we discern of which form each thing is from the quality of the works. CHAPTER VII. — Let the hypocrites therefore sing forth — those who with blind minds will not receive the light of truth — in what form of the cross Christ, the Lord of majesty, was affixed to the wood, what lay in the tomb, and, the stone of the monument being rolled away, what flesh rose again on the third day, and in whom, after His resurrection, He rebuked certain disbelieving disciples and refuted the hesitation of the doubting, when He said: 'Handle and see, for a spirit has not flesh and bones, as you see me to have' (Luke 24:39): and to the apostle Thomas:
175:17
Infer ma num tuam in latus meum,etvide manus meas et pedes et noli esse incredulus, sed fidelis (Joan. xx, 27) ? Qua utique manifestatione corporis sui jam hæreti corum mendacia destruebat: ut universa Ecclesia Christi imbuenda doctrinis, hoc sibi non dubitaret credendum,quod apostoli susceperant prædicandum. At si in tanta luce veritatis tenebras 1371 suas hæretica obduratio non relinquit, ostendant, unde sibi spem vitæ polliceantur æternæ, ad quam nisi per mediatorem Dei ethominum, hominem Jesum Christum, non potest perveniri. Sicut enim ait beatus Petrus apostolus, Non est aliud nomen datum homini- bru sub cælo, in quo oporteat nos salvos fieri(Act. IV, 12);
「把你的手探入我的肋旁,看我的手和腳,不要不信,總要信」(約翰福音二十章27節)?藉這樣顯明祂的身體,祂當時便已在摧毀異端者的謊言:好使那將要領受教義的整個基督教會,毫不懷疑地相信這件事——即使徒所擔負去宣講的——是它自己所當信的。但假使在如此浩大的真理之光中,異端的頑梗仍不肯離棄其黑暗,就讓他們指出:他們憑什麼為自己應許永生的盼望,而這盼望除非藉神人之間的中保、那人耶穌基督,便無法達到。因為正如蒙福使徒彼得所言:「天下人間,沒有賜下別的名,我們可以靠著得救」(使徒行傳四章12節);
'Put your hand into my side, and see my hands and feet, and be not unbelieving, but believing' (John 20:27)? By which manifestation of His body He was even then destroying the lies of the heretics: that the whole Church of Christ, to be imbued with doctrines, might not doubt that this was to be believed by itself, which the apostles had undertaken to preach. But if in so great a light of truth heretical obduracy does not relinquish its darkness, let them show whence they promise themselves the hope of eternal life, to which it cannot be attained except through the mediator of God and men, the man Jesus Christ. For as blessed Peter the apostle says, 'There is no other name given to men under heaven, in which we must be saved' (Acts 4:12);
175:18
nor is there redemption of human captivity except in His blood, who gave Himself a redemption for all (1 Tim. 2:6), and who, as the blessed apostle Paul preaches, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a servant, made in the likeness of men, and found in fashion as a man. He humbled Himself, becoming obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Wherefore God also has exalted Him, and given Him a name which is above every name: that in the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, on earth, and under the earth, and every tongue should confess that the Lord Jesus Christ is in the glory of God the Father (Phil. 2:6-11).
175:19
CAp. VIII. — Cum ergo unus sit Dominus Jesus Christus, et versæ Deitatis veræque humanitatis in ipso una prorsus eademque persona sit, exaltationem tamen, qua illum, sicut doctor gentium dicit, exaltavit Deus, et donavit illi nomen quod super omne nomen excellit, ad eam intelligimus pertinere formam, quæ ditanda erat tantæ glorificationis aug mento. lu forma quippe Dei æqualis erat Filius Patri, et inter genitorem atque unigenitum nulla in essentia erat discretio, nulla in majestate diversitas, nec perincarnationis mysterium aliquid decesserat Verbo quod ei 1373 Patris munere redderetur.
CHAPTER VIII. — Since therefore the Lord Jesus Christ is one, and in Him there is wholly one and the same person of true Deity and true humanity, yet the exaltation by which, as the teacher of the Gentiles says, God exalted Him and gave Him a name which excels above every name, we understand to pertain to that form which was to be enriched by the increase of so great a glorification. For in the form of God the Son was equal to the Father, and between the begetter and the only-begotten there was no discretion in essence, no diversity in majesty, nor had anything departed from the Word through the mystery of the incarnation which might be restored to Him by the Father's gift.
175:20
But the form of a servant, through which the impassible Deity fulfilled the mystery of great piety, is the human humility which, raised into the glory of the divine power, is from the very conception of the Virgin so joined together in such unity of Deity and humanity, that neither were the divine things done without the man, nor the human things without God. Wherefore, just as the Lord of majesty is said to be crucified, so He who from everlastingness is equal to God is said to be exalted: because inseparably, the unity of person remaining, one and the same is both wholly son of man on account of the flesh, and wholly Son of God on account of the one Deity with the Father. Whatever therefore Christ received in time, He received according to the man, to whom the things He did not have were conferred.
175:21
XXVI, 38).
For according to the power of the Deity the Son too has indifferently all things which the Father has, and the things which He received from the Father in the form of a servant, the same He also gave in the form of God. For according to the form of God, He and the Father are one (John 10:30); but according to the form of a servant, 'He came not to do His own will, but the will of Him who sent Him' (John 5:30). According to the form of God, 'As the Father has life in Himself, so He gave to the Son also to have life in Himself' (ibid. 26); according to the form of a servant, 'His soul is sorrowful even unto death' (Matt. 26:38). And the same is He, as the Apostle preaches, both rich and poor. Rich, because, as the evangelist says:
175:22
'In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God: the same was in the beginning with God: all things were made through Him, and without Him was made nothing' (John 1:1-3). But poor, because for our sakes the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us (ibid. 14). But what is His self-emptying, or what His poverty, save the acceptance of the servile form? through which, the majesty of the Word being veiled, the dispensation of human redemption was fulfilled. CHAPTER IX.
175:23
- Nam quia captivitatis nostræ resolvi originalia vincula non poterant,nisi existeret homo nostri generis nostræque naturæ, quem peccati praejudicia non tenerent, et qui immaculato sanguine suochirographum lethalodilueret, sicutab initioerat divinitus præordinatum,ita est in plenitudine præfiniti temporis factum: ut multis modis significata promissio in diu expectatum veniret effectum, nec posset esse ambiguum quod continuis testificationibus semperfuerat nuntiatum.In magno autem sacrilegio se versari haereticorum manifestat impietas, cum sub specie Deitatis honorandæ, humanae carnis in Christo denegant veritatem;
——因為我們被擄的原初綁縛無法被解開,除非有一位與我們同族、與我們同性的人存在——罪的判決不能挾制他,且他能以自己無瑕的血塗抹那致命的字據——如此,正如自起初便由神所預定的,這事就在所定時候的滿足中成就了:好使那多方指明的應許臨到那久候的成效,也使那向來藉連續的見證所宣告的,不能有任何含糊。但異端者的不敬虔顯明自己陷於極大的褻瀆,因為他們在尊崇神性的外表下,否認基督裡人肉體的真實;
— For since the original bonds of our captivity could not be loosed unless there existed a man of our race and of our nature, whom the prejudgments of sin did not hold, and who might blot out with His own immaculate blood the deadly handwriting, so — as had been from the beginning divinely foreordained — it was accomplished in the fullness of the appointed time: that the promise signified in many ways might come to the long-awaited effect, nor could there be any ambiguity in what had ever been announced by continual testifications. But the impiety of the heretics shows itself to be engaged in a great sacrilege, when, under the appearance of honoring the Deity, they deny the truth of human flesh in Christ;
175:24
and they think it is piously to be believed, if it be said that in our Savior that which saves is not true, whereas thus, according to the promise running through all the ages, the world is reconciled to God in Christ, so that unless the Word deigned to become flesh, no flesh could be saved. For the whole mystery of the Christian faith is discolored with great obscurity (as the heretics would have it), if the light of truth is thought to have lain hidden beneath the falsehood of a phantasm. Let no Christian therefore think it a thing to be blushed at, concerning the truth of our body in Christ:
175:25
because all the apostles and disciples of the apostles, and all the illustrious doctors of the Churches who deserved to attain to the crown of martyrdom or to the glory of confession, shone in the light of this faith, thundering everywhere with concordant judgments that in the Lord Jesus Christ one person of the Deity and of the flesh is to be confessed. But by what likeness of reason, by what portion of the divine volumes, does heretical impiety think itself to be aided, which denies the truth of Christ's body, since neither does the law testify to this, nor prophecy foresing it, nor the Gospels teach it, nor has Christ Himself ceased to show it?
175:26
Let them search through the whole series of the Scriptures, to find whither they may flee from their darkness, not whereby they may obscure the true light, and through all the ages they will thus find the truth flashing forth, that they may see this great and wondrous mystery believed from the beginning, which was completed in the end. And since no part of the holy writings is silent about it, it is enough to have set down certain good signs of the truth, by which the diligence of faith may be directed into a most splendid breadth, and by the sincere light of understanding may perceive that in the Son of God, who unceasingly professes Himself the son of man and man, it is a thing not to be blushed at for Christians, but most constantly to be gloried in. CHAPTER X.
175:27
— But that your piety may recognize that they do not agree with the preachings of the venerable Fathers, I have believed that some of their judgments should be subjoined to this discourse. If you deign to review them, you will find that we preach nothing other than what our holy Fathers throughout the whole world have taught: nor that anyone differs from them, save only the impious heretics.
175:28
These things therefore, most glorious and venerable Emperor, having been touched upon with as much brevity as I could, you will recognize that our preaching also is united with the faith divinely inspired in you, and that we differ in nothing from the evangelical and apostolic doctrine, or from the symbol of the catholic profession; since, as the blessed apostle Paul teaches, 'Great is the mystery of piety, which was manifested in the flesh, justified in the spirit, appeared to angels, was preached to the nations, was believed in the world, was received up in glory' (1 Tim. 3:16). What therefore is more useful to your salvation? what more befitting your power? than that you should provide by your constitution for the peace of the Churches of the Lord,
175:29
CAP. III. — Unum igitur hoc est immobile fundamentum, una hæc felix fidei petra, Petri ore confessa: Tu es, inquit, Christus Filius Dei vivi (Matlh. XVI, 16); tanta in se argumenta sustinens veritatis, quantæ perversitatum quaestiones et infidelitatis calumniae movebuntur. 1384 Jam in cæteris diapensatio voluntatis paternae est:
and defend God's gifts among all who are subject to you, nor by any reasoning suffer, through the envy of the devil, his ministers to rage to the destruction of anyone: so that you who in this temporal world are eminent in reign, may in eternity deserve to reign with Christ. Given on the sixteenth day before the Kalends of September, in the consulship of the Augusti Leo and Majorian. CHAPTER III. — This therefore is the one immovable foundation, this the one blessed rock of faith, confessed by the mouth of Peter: 'You are,' he says, 'the Christ, the Son of the living God' (Matt. 16:16); sustaining in itself as many arguments of truth as the questions of perversities and the calumnies of infidelity shall be moved. Now in the rest is the dispensation of the paternal will:
175:30
the Virgin, the birth, and the body, and after these the flesh, death, the underworld — these are our salvation. For on account of the human race the Son of God was born of the Virgin and of the Holy Spirit, He Himself serving Himself in this operation, and His own power — that is, God's — overshadowing, He sowed for Himself the beginnings of a body, and established the origins of flesh: that, made man of the Virgin, He might receive in Himself the nature of the flesh, and through the fellowship of this admixture the body of the whole human race might exist sanctified in Him: that, just as all might be founded in Him through that whereby He willed Himself to be corporeal, so again He Himself might be referred into all through that which is His invisible.
175:31
Quid tandemdignuma nobis tantæ dignationis affectui rependetur? Inenarrabilia a Deo originis unus unigenitus Deus, in corpusculi humani formam sanctae Virginis utero insertua, accrescit.
The invisible image of God therefore did not refuse the purer beginning of a human origin, and through conception, birth, wailing and the cradle, He passed through all the contumelies of our nature. What worthy thing at last shall be repaid by us for the affection of so great a condescension? The one only-begotten God, unspeakable from His divine origin, inserted into the form of a little human body in the womb of the holy Virgin, grows. He who contains all things, and within whom and through whom are all things, is brought forth by the law of human birth; and He at whose voice the archangels and angels tremble, at which heaven and earth and all the elements of this world shall be dissolved, is heard in the wailing of infancy. He who is invisible and incomprehensible is now wrapped in the cradle-clothes of mortals, to be seen, felt, and touched.
175:32
If anyone regards these things as unworthy of God, he will confess himself bound by so much the greater a benefit, in proportion as these things less befit the majesty of God. He who was made man had no need of the man; but we had need that God should become flesh and dwell in us, that is, that by the assumption of one flesh He might inhabit the whole of flesh from within. His humility is our nobility; His reproach is our honour. What He, God, is while abiding in flesh, that we in turn become, renewed from flesh into God. He knows nothing at all, he knows not his own life, who is ignorant that Christ Jesus is both true God and also true man; and it is a matter of equal peril to deny that Christ Jesus is either the Divine Spirit or the flesh of our body.
175:33
Omnia ergo, inquit, gui confitebitur me coram hominibus, confitebor et ego eum coram Patre meo Qui at in cælis.
'Everyone therefore,' He says, 'who shall confess Me before men, I also will confess him before My Father who is in heaven. But whosoever shall deny Me before men, him will I also deny before My Father who is in heaven' (Matt. x, 32). These things the Word made flesh was speaking, and the man Jesus Christ, the Lord of majesty, was teaching: He Himself the mediator, constituted in Himself for the salvation of the Church, and by that very mystery of a mediator between God and men existing as one being who is both, since, the natures being united in Him into one selfsame, in Him the reality of each nature is the same: yet so that He lacked neither in the other; lest perchance by being born He should cease to be God as man, and again as man He should not be God while abiding.
175:34
This, then, is the true faith of human blessedness: to proclaim God and man, to confess the Word and the flesh; neither to be ignorant that God is man, nor to fail to recognise that the flesh is the Word. The only-begotten God, therefore, having been born man of a Virgin, and according to the fulness of times about to advance in Himself the man into God, held to this manner throughout the whole of the Gospel discourse: that He should teach Himself to be believed the Son of God, and admonish that He be proclaimed the son of man; speaking and doing as man all things that are God's, then speaking and doing as God all things that are man's; yet so that in that very discourse of both kinds He never spoke except with signification both of the man and of God.
175:35
From this, then, arises for heretics an occasion of deceiving the simple and the ignorant, so that what was said by Him according to the man they falsely allege to have been said according to the weakness of the divine nature; and because it is one and the same who speaks, they contend that all He was speaking about Himself He spoke as God. Nor indeed do we deny that the whole of that discourse belongs to Him who remains of His own nature. But if Jesus Christ is both man and God, and neither was He God only when He first became man, nor when He was man was He not also God, nor after being man was He not wholly man in God, wholly God, then it is necessary that the mystery of His sayings, which is that of their kind, be one and the same. And when you distinguish in Him the man from God according to time, then distinguish also the speech of God and of the man.
175:36
And when you confess God and man in time, discern the sayings of God and of the man in time. But when you understand it from man and God, then again perceive the time of the wholly man, the wholly God already. If anything was said for the demonstration of that time, fitting to the time the things that were said—so that one thing is God before the man, another is man and God, another is after the man and God wholly man and wholly God—do not confound by times and kinds the mystery of the dispensation, since according to the quality of the kinds and the natures it was necessary that His speech in the mystery of the man was one thing when not yet born, another while still to die, another now eternal.
175:37
For our sake, therefore, Jesus Christ, remaining all these things and born as man of our body, spoke according to the custom of our nature; yet not omitting to be what is of His own nature, that is, God. For although in His birth, and passion, and death He performed the things of our nature, yet He accomplished all those very things by the power of His own nature; and so forth. Do you see how God and man are so proclaimed that death is reckoned to the man, but the raising of the flesh to God? (Yet not so that He who died is one, and He through whom the dead One rises again is another.
175:38
Naturam Dei in virtute resurrectionis intellige, dispensationem hominis in morte cognosce. Hæc igitur demonstranda a me paucis fuerunt, ut utriusquenaturae (nformam tractari in Domino Jesu Christo meminissemus: quia qui erat in forma Dei, formam servi accepit. CAP.
For the flesh despoiled is the dead Christ, and again the Christ who raises Christ from the dead is the same Christ divesting Himself of the flesh.) Understand the nature of God in the power of the resurrection; recognise the dispensation of the man in death. And though both were wrought by their own natures, yet remember that Christ Jesus is one, He who is both. These things, then, had to be demonstrated by me in a few words, that we might remember that the form of each nature is treated in the Lord Jesus Christ: for He who was in the form of God took the form of a servant. Chapter.
175:39
IV.—But how have they, who are called Christians, dared even to doubt whether the Lord, who came forth from Mary, is indeed the Son of God in substance and nature, while that which is according to the flesh is of the seed of David and of the flesh of holy Mary? CHAPTER V.—Hence that which was read, that the Lord of majesty was crucified, we are not to suppose was crucified as it were in His majesty; but because the same is God, the same is man—God through the Divinity, man through the assumption of flesh—Christ Jesus the Lord of majesty is said to be crucified, because, being a partaker of each nature, that is, of the human and the divine, He underwent the passion in the nature of the man; so that without distinction both He who suffered is called the Lord of majesty, and the son of man, as it is written, who descended from heaven (John.

III, 13). Servemus distinctionem Divinitatiset carnis. Unus in utroque loquitur Dei Filius, quia in eodem utraque natura est. Etsi idem loquitur, non uno semper loquitur modo. Intende in eonuncgloriam Dei, nunc hominis passiones. Quasi Deus loquitur, quaesunt divina, quia Verbum est: quasi homo dicit, quæ sunt humana, quia in ea substantia loquebatur.- Sed dum hos redarguimus, emergunt alii qui carnem Domini dicant et Divinitatem unius esse nature. Quae tantum sacrilegium inferna vomuerunt?
iii, 13). Let there be silent, therefore, empty questionings about words, since the kingdom of God, as it is written, consists not in the persuasiveness of speech, but in the demonstration of power (1 Cor. ii, 4, and iv, 20). Let us keep the distinction of Divinity and of flesh. One in both, the Son of God speaks, because in the same one both natures are. And though the same speaks, He does not always speak in one manner. Behold in Him now the glory of God, now the sufferings of the man. As God He speaks the things that are divine, because He is the Word; as man He says the things that are human, because He was speaking in that substance. But while we refute these, there emerge others who say that the flesh of the Lord and His Divinity are of one nature. What hells have vomited forth so great a sacrilege?
175:41
The Arians are now more tolerable, whose strength of perfidy grows up through these men, so that with greater contention they assert that the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit are not of one substance, because these men have attempted to say that the Lord's Divinity and His flesh are of one substance. And these frequently remind me that they hold the decree of the Council of Nicaea. But in that decree our Fathers said not the flesh, but the Word of God to be of one substance with the Father. And they confessed that the Word indeed proceeded from the paternal substance, but that the flesh is of the Virgin. How, then, is the name of the Council of Nicaea held up as a pretext, and things brought in that our forefathers never perceived? And so forth.
175:42
Hence beautifully the Apostle used a repetition of the same word, saying of the Lord Jesus Christ: 'When He was in the form of God, He thought it not robbery to be equal with God; but emptied Himself, taking the form of a servant.' What is 'in the form of God,' but in the fulness of the Godhead, in that expression of divine perfection? Therefore, when He was in the fulness of the Divinity, He emptied Himself (Phil. ii, 6), and took the fulness of human nature and perfection. As nothing was lacking to God, so nothing was lacking to the completeness of the man, that He might be perfect in each form. Whence also David says: 'Beautiful in form beyond the sons of men' (Ps. xliv, 3). The Apollinarist is confuted; he has nowhere to turn; he is shut in by his own nets.
175:43
For He Himself said, 'He took the form of a servant'; it was not a servant who spoke. Again, therefore, I ask: What is 'in the form of God'? He answered, 'in the nature of God.' For there are, says the Apostle, those who are not by nature gods (Gal. iv, 8). I ask further: What is 'taking the form of a servant'? Without doubt the perfection of human nature and condition, as I have said, that He might be in the likeness of men. And beautifully He said the likeness not of flesh, but of men, because in the flesh it is the same. But because He alone was without sin, whereas every man is in sin, He was seen in the appearance of a man. Whence also the prophet says: 'And He is man, and who shall know Him?' (Jer. xvii, 9).
175:44
HODIO secundum carnem, sed ultra hominem secundum divinam operationem.Denique cum leprosum tangeret, homovidebatur, sed ultra hominem, cummundaret. Et cum Lazarum mortuum fleret,mortuum quasi homo flebat;sed supra hominem erat,cum mortuum vinctisjuberetpedibusexire. Homo videbatur, cum penderet in cruce; sed supra hominem,cum reseratis tumulis mortuos suscitaret. CAP. VI. — Noli itaque dubitare ibi nunc esse bominem Christum, unde venturus est; memoriterque recole et fideliter tene Christianam confessionem: quoniam resurrexit a morbus, ascendit in cælum, sedet ad dezteram Patris: nec aliunde quam inde venturus est ad vivos et mortuosjudicandos;
祂按肉身確是人,但按神聖的作為卻超乎人。總之,當祂摸那長大痲瘋的人時,祂顯為人,但當祂潔淨他時卻超乎人。當祂為死了的拉撒路哀哭時,祂如人一般為死者哀哭;但當祂命那捆著腳的死人出來時,祂卻在人之上。當祂懸在十字架上時,祂顯為人;但當墳墓開了、祂使死人復活時,祂卻在人之上。第六章——因此,不要懷疑那作人的基督如今正在祂將要從那裡再來之處;並要忠實地記得、堅定地持守基督徒的信認:祂從死裡復活,升上高天,坐在父的右邊;祂要再來審判活人死人,也必不從別處,只從那裡而來;
He was today according to the flesh, but beyond man according to the divine operation. In short, when He touched the leper, He seemed a man, but beyond man when He cleansed him. And when He wept for Lazarus who was dead, He wept for the dead one as a man; but He was above man, when He commanded the dead one to come forth with his feet bound. He seemed a man, when He hung upon the cross; but above man, when, the tombs being unsealed, He raised the dead. CHAPTER VI.—Do not, therefore, doubt that Christ the man is now there whence He is to come; and remember faithfully and hold firmly the Christian confession: that He rose from the dead, ascended into heaven, sits at the right hand of the Father: nor is He to come from anywhere else than from there to judge the living and the dead;
175:45
Ille in se naturam commendat humanam, tu in illo-audes deformare divinam ? Agnoscamus geminam substantiam Christi, divinam scilicet,qua aequalis est Patri; humanam, qua major est Pater.
and so He shall come, as that angelic voice testified, in the same manner as He was seen to go into heaven (Acts i, 11), that is, in the same form of flesh and substance, to which indeed He gave immortality, but took not away its nature. But now He has appeared as mediator between God and men in such a way that, joining both natures in the unity of person, He both exalted the accustomed things with the unaccustomed and tempered the unaccustomed with the accustomed. What then, heretic? Since Christ is God and man, He speaks as man, and do you slander God? He commends the human nature in Himself; do you dare to deform the divine in Him? Let us acknowledge the twofold substance of Christ, namely the divine, by which He is equal to the Father, and the human, by which the Father is greater.
175:46
Christum in his omnibus, Christum in singulis confitemur. Quis nonestderelictus in inferno? 1392 ChristusJesus, sed in amma sola. Quis resurrecturus, triduo jacuit in sepulcro? Christus Jesus, sed in carne sola. Dicitur ergo in his singulis Christus.
But both together are not two, but one Christ: lest God be a quaternity, not a Trinity. For as one man is a rational soul and flesh, so one Christ is God and man; and by this Christ is God, rational soul, and flesh. We confess Christ in all these, Christ in each singly. Who then is it through whom the world was made? Christ Jesus, but in the form of God. Who is it that was crucified under Pontius Pilate? Christ Jesus, but in the form of a servant. Likewise concerning the several things of which man consists. Who is it that was not abandoned in hell? Christ Jesus, but in the soul alone. Who, about to rise again, lay three days in the tomb? Christ Jesus, but in the flesh alone. Christ, therefore, is spoken of in these several things.
175:47
But all these are not two, or three, but one Christ. Therefore He said: 'If you loved Me, you would surely rejoice, because I go to the Father' (John xiv, 28). For the human nature is to be congratulated, in that it was so assumed by the only-begotten Word that it was constituted immortal in heaven, and thus earth became sublime, so that incorruptible dust sits at the right hand of the Father. For it is ours to believe, His to know; and so, just as God the Word, taking up the whole of what is man's, is man, so the man assumed, receiving the whole of what is God's, cannot be other than God. Yet not because He is said to be incarnate and commingled is any diminution of His substance to be understood.
175:48
For God knows how to be mingled without His own corruption, and yet to be mingled in truth. He knows how to take into Himself in such a way that nothing of increase accrues to Him, He who knows how to pour Himself wholly in such a way that nothing of loss befalls Him. Therefore, let us not, forming a conjecture according to the understanding of our own feebleness—according to visible proofs of experience concerning creatures entering into one another as equals—suppose that God and man are commingled, and that by such a confusion of flesh and the Word, as it were some body has been affected. Far be it so to believe, that we should think two natures reduced into one substance by a sort of fused kind. For a commingling of this sort is the corruption of each part.
175:49
For God, who is containing, not containable, penetrating, not penetrable, filling, not fillable, who everywhere at once is wholly present and everywhere diffused through the infusion of His power, was mercifully mingled with human nature; human nature was not mingled with the divine. CHAPTER VII.—But let us see why He comes with the cross. Namely, that those who crucified Him may perceive the blindness of their own madness; and therefore the sign of their shamelessness is borne. Therefore the prophet says: 'Then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn' (Zech. xii, 10), seeing their accuser, and acknowledging their sin. And what wonder is it, if He shall come bearing the cross, when He Himself shows the wounds of His body? For then, He says, they shall see whom they pierced (Ibid., and John xix, 37).
175:50
And just as after the resurrection He willed to refute the distrust of Thomas, and showed him the places of the nails, and revealed the wounds of His side, and said: 'Put in thy hand, and see, for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as you see Me to have' (John xx, 27; Luke xxiv, 39); so then also He will show His wounds and display the cross: that He may show that He is the same who had been crucified. For as, when two are separated by a quarrel, one set in the midst of the disputants dissolves the strife and discord, so also did Christ. God was justly angry with us, and we despised Him though angry, and turned away from the merciful Lord; and Christ interposed Himself in the midst, and joined both natures, and Himself bore the punishment that was hanging over us.
175:51
CIX, i; Matth.
Christ therefore offered to the Father the first-fruits of our nature, and the Father marveled at the offered gift, both because so great a dignity presented it, and because what was offered was defiled by no stain. For He received it offered even into His own hands, and made it a partaker of His own throne, and, what is more, placed it at the part of His own right hand. Let us recognise who it is that heard: 'Sit at My right hand' (Ps. cix, 1; Matt. xxii, 44); what nature it is to which He said: 'Be a partaker of My throne.' It is that nature which heard: 'Earth thou art, and unto earth shalt thou go' (Gen. iii, 19). What speech I should use, with what word I should speak, I am not able to discover.
175:52
Natura fragilis,natura contempta, et omnibus monstrata deterior,omnia vicit,omnia superavit, et omnibus hodierna die meruit excelsior reperiri.Hodie angeli diu vota deMderata receperunt; hodie archangeli,quod multo tempore cupiebant,inspicere valuerunt; naturam nostram in sede Dominica immortali fulgentem gloria perviderunt. CAp.
A nature frail, a nature despised, and shown to be worse than all, has conquered all, has overcome all, and this very day has been counted worthy to be found more exalted than all. Today the angels have received the vows long desired; today the archangels have been able to behold what they had long time desired; they have surveyed our nature shining in the Lord's throne with immortal glory. CHAPTER VIII.—Of which thing he is a witness who says: 'All have turned aside, together they have become unprofitable' (Ps. xiii, 3). And the prophets beseeching the aid of Christ: 'Lord, bow down Thy heavens, and descend' (Ps. cxliii, 5). Not that He might change the place in which are all things, but that for our salvation He might assume the flesh of human frailty, the Apostle Paul singing the same thing in harmony:
175:53
'Though He was rich, He became poor, that we by His poverty might be rich' (2 Cor. viii, 9). And He came upon the earth, and, going forth as man from a virginal womb which He had sanctified, confirming by the dispensation the interpretation of His name Emmanuel, that is, God with us (Matt. i, 23), He began in a wondrous manner to be what we are, and did not cease to be what He was: thus assuming our nature, that He might not lose what He Himself was. For although John writes: 'The Word was made flesh' (John i, 14), that is, in other words, man, yet He who never ceased to be God was not turned into flesh. To whom also holy David speaks: 'But Thou art the selfsame' (Ps. ci, 28). And the Father from heaven testifies and says:
175:54
Tu es Filius meus dilectus, in quo mihe bene complacui(Matth. III, 17; Marc.I, it; Luc. III, 22): ut et.homo factus, oostra confessione permanere dicatur quod fuit priusquam homo fieret,Paulo nobiscum eadem predicante:Jesus Christus heri et hodie, ipse in æternum (Hebr. XIII, 8). In eo enim quod ait ipse, ostendit eum pristinam non mutasse naturam, nec Divinitatis suae imminuisse divitias, quia propter nos pauper enectus, plenam similitudinem nostrae conditionis Assumpserat. Unus Filius Patris, nos trique meJjator, nec aequa litatem ejus amisit, nec a nostro consortio separatus est;
「這是我的愛子,我所喜悅的」(太三17;可一11;路三22):以致祂雖已成為人,卻藉我們的信認被說為仍是祂在成為人以先所是的,保羅也與我們一同宣告同樣的話:「耶穌基督昨日、今日、直到永遠是一樣的」(來十三8)。因為在祂說「一樣」這話中,就顯明祂並未改變祂先前的本性,也未減損祂神性的豐富,因為祂為我們的緣故成了貧窮,取了我們境況的完全樣式。父獨一的兒子、我們的中保,既未失去祂與父同等的地位,也未與我們的交通隔絕;
'This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased' (Matt. iii, 17; Mark i, 11; Luke iii, 22): so that even having been made man, He is said by our confession to remain what He was before He became man, Paul proclaiming the same thing with us: 'Jesus Christ, the same yesterday and today, and forever' (Heb. xiii, 8). For in that He says 'the same,' he shows that He did not change His former nature, nor diminished the riches of His Divinity, because, having become poor for our sakes, He had assumed the full likeness of our condition. The one Son of the Father, and our mediator, neither lost His equality, nor was separated from our fellowship;
175:55
III, I?; Mare. I. i t; Luc. III, 22).
God the invisible, and man the visible, hidden as the form of a servant, and proved by the confession of believers to be the Lord of glory. For the Father did not deprive Him of the name of His own nature, after He became man for us and was made poor, nor did He call Him by another name when baptized in the river Jordan, but the only-begotten Son: 'Thou art My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased' (Matt. iii, 17; Mark i, 11; Luke iii, 22). Nor was our likeness changed into the nature of the Divinity, nor was that of the Divinity turned into the likeness of our nature. CHAPTER IX.
175:56
—When, therefore, God had come forth from the Virgin in that human nature which He had assumed, existing as one out of two things mutually contrary to each other, flesh and spirit, the one is assumed into God, the other bestows the grace of the Deity. He was indeed sent, but as man. For twofold was the nature in Him. Hence, in short, He also grew weary from the journey, hence He also hungered, and thirsted, and was made sorrowful, and wept by the law of the human body. CHAPTER X.
175:57
—When, therefore, we see certain things in Christ so human that they seem to differ in nothing from the common frailty of mortals, and certain things so divine that they befit no other than that ineffable nature of the Deity, the narrowness of the human intellect is at a loss, and, struck with the stupor of so great a wonder, it knows not whither to incline, what to hold, whither to turn itself. If it thinks Him man, it beholds Him returning from the dead with spoils, the kingdom of death having been vanquished. Wherefore He is to be contemplated with all fear and reverence, so that in one and the same the truth of each nature may be so demonstrated that neither may anything unworthy and unseemly be thought of that divine and ineffable substance, nor again may the things done humanly be judged mocked by false images.
175:58
CAP.
CHAPTER XI.—He was named man, though by nature He is God, the Word of God the Father, since He likewise as we partook of blood and flesh. For thus He appeared on earth, not losing what He was, but assuming the nature of humanity, perfect in its own reason. One, therefore, He is, both before the incarnation true God, and who in His humanity remained what He was, and is, and shall be. The one Lord Jesus Christ is therefore not to be divided, into man apart and God apart; but we say that Jesus Christ is one and the same, not being ignorant of the differences of the natures, but preserving them unconfused between themselves.
175:59
Ergo (0) inconru sione, ut an te dixi, servata inhabita?se ait Verbum in nobis.
For it is understood as it were as one dwelling in another, that is, the divine nature not having suffered commingling or change in the humanity, so as to be what it was not. For whatever is said to dwell in another does not itself become such as is that in which it dwells, but the one is rather understood in the other. But in the nature of the Word and of the humanity, the diversity of the natures marks out for us the difference alone. For one Christ is understood out of both. Therefore without confusion, as I said before, He is said to have dwelt as the Word in us, its integrity being preserved. For He knows that there is one only-begotten Son, made flesh and man.
175:60
Ait igitur sancta et magna synodus, ipsum, qui est ex Deo Patre natus naturaliter, Filium unigenitum, Deum verum de Deo vero, lumen de lumine, per quem et cum quo omniafecerit Pater, hunc descendisse, incarnatum esse, et hominem factum, passum esse, resurrexisse tertia dij, et ascendisse rursus in cœlos. Haee nos sequi verba debemus; his nos coavenit obtemperare dogmatibus: considerantes quid sit incarnatum 1398 esse, et hominem factum Dei Verbum. Non enim dicimus quod Dei natura conversa, vel immutata, facta sit caro; nec quod in totum hominem, qui est ex anima et corpore, trans-. formata sit;
因此,那神聖而偉大的會議說:那位按本性從父神所生的獨生子、真神之真神、光之光、父藉之並偕之造成萬有的一位,祂降下、道成肉身、成為人、受苦、第三日復活、又升上諸天。我們當跟從這些話語;我們當順服這些教義:思想道成肉身、神的道成為人是何意。因為我們並不說神的本性被轉變或被改變而成了肉身;也不說它被變形為一個由魂與身體構成的完整的人;
The holy and great synod says, therefore, that He Himself, who was born naturally of God the Father, the only-begotten Son, true God of true God, light of light, through whom and with whom the Father made all things, that He descended, was incarnate, and made man, suffered, rose again on the third day, and ascended again into the heavens. These words we ought to follow; to these teachings it befits us to submit: considering what it is to be incarnate, and for the Word of God to be made man. For we do not say that the nature of God, being converted or changed, was made flesh; nor that it was transformed into a whole man, who is of soul and body;
175:61
but rather this, that the Word substantially united to Himself flesh animated by a rational soul, and became man incomprehensibly and ineffably, and was called also the son of man—not by bare will alone, nor yet by the mere assumption of a person, but because natures indeed diverse came together into one, yet there is one Christ and Son out of both, the diversity of the natures not being done away or removed by the conjunction, but because together they wrought for us one Lord, and Christ, and Son, that is, Divinity and humanity, through that secret and ineffable coupling unto unity. And so He who before all ages was born of the Father is also said to have been begotten carnally of a woman.
175:62
Not because His divine nature took its beginning from the sacred Virgin, nor because for its own sake it had need to be born a second time after that nativity which it had from the Father (for it is foolish and stupid to say this, that He who before all ages is co-eternal with the Father should have needed a second generation, in order to begin to be), but because for our sake and for our salvation He united to Himself human nature, and came forth from a woman; therefore He is said to have been born carnally. For a common man was not first born of the holy Virgin, and then at last the Word dwelt in Him; but in the very womb and virginal belly He joined Himself with flesh, and endured a carnal generation, making the nativity of His flesh His own.
175:63
Thus we say that He both suffered and rose again, not because God the Word in His own nature suffered either blows, or the piercings of nails, or other wounds (for God is incorporeal and beyond passion), but because that body, which had become His own, suffered; therefore He is said to have suffered all these things for us. For God, who could not suffer, was in that body which was suffering. In like manner we understand also His death. For the Word of God is naturally immortal and incorruptible, and life, and life-giving. But because His own proper body, by the grace of God, according to the word of Paul, tasted death for all (Heb. ii, 9), therefore He Himself is said to have suffered death for us.
175:64
Not that He Himself had experienced death, as far as pertains to His own nature (for it is madness either to think or to say this); but because, as we said above, His flesh tasted death. So also, the flesh rising again, we again speak of His resurrection: not because He had fallen into corruption—far be it—but because His body rose again. Thus we confess one Christ and Lord, not co-adoring a man together with the Word, lest a certain species of division be introduced; but adoring one and the same already: because His own body is not alien from the Word, with which He Himself also sits beside the Father. Nor do we say this as though two sons sat beside Him, but one with the flesh through the unity:
175:65
for if we were unwilling to accept such a coupling made through substance, either as impossible or as unbecoming, we fall into this, that we say there are two sons: for then it is necessary to distinguish and to say that the man existed separately, honoured with the appellation of Son alone, and again the Word, which is of God, is both in name and in truth the Son of God. But we ought not to divide the one Lord Jesus Christ into two sons. For neither does this help the right reasoning of the faith, though some allege I know not what coupling of persons. For Scripture did not say that the Word of God took to Himself the person of a man, but that He was made flesh (John i, 14).
175:66
In tali sensu sanctos Patres fuisse comperimus.
But this is to show that the Word of God, likewise as we, had participation of flesh and blood, and made our body properly His own, and that man came forth from a woman, the Deity not being cast off nor laid aside, nor that generation which He had from the Father; but that even in the assumption of the flesh He remained God, which He was. This everywhere the reasoning of the right faith attests. In such a sense we have found the holy Fathers to have held. Therefore they did not hesitate to call the holy Virgin Theotokos, not because the nature of the Word and the Deity took its beginning in the holy Virgin, but because there was born of her that sacred body, animated by a rational soul, to which the Word of God, substantially united, is said to have been born carnally.
175:67
Inscriptio ipsius epistolæ non, exiguam difficultatem facessit. Hanc in mss. novem collectionum inve: nimus, nimirum Hispanica, Isidoriana 11, 12 et 20 usque 24, ac in exemplari Sichardi. Porro inscri.ptio in ejusmodi codicibus et in episcopi, et in episcopalis sedis nomine variat. Nam exemplaria Vat. Tres codices a Quesnello allegati not.
The inscription of the epistle itself occasions no small difficulty. This we have found in the manuscripts of nine collections, namely the Spanish, the Isidorian 11, 12, and 20 through 24, and in the exemplar of Sichardus. Moreover, the inscription in codices of this sort varies both in the name of the bishop and in the name of the episcopal see. For the Vatican, Spanish, and Isidorian exemplars, together with the manuscript collections 12, 20, 21, 22, and 23, present Leo as bishop of Ravenna (Ravennas, or Ravennensis, or Ravennatensis). But the codices of collections 11 and 24, together with the exemplars of Merlinus and Sichardus, exhibit Neon, Neonius, or Neonia, likewise of Ravenna. The three codices alleged by Quesnel in note 1, in which Neonia or Neonia is read, we have ascertained to pertain to collection 24.
175:68
Nos vero duos Vindebonenses ventustos libros invenimus, in quibus Leonis quidem nomen retinetur, at episcopalis sedes maxime discrepat. Nam exemplum Vindebonense, quod puriorem Hispanicam collectionem at continere alibi iximus, ad Leonem Arbonensem in titulo prodit, et in inscriptione, Leo Leoni episcsopo Arbonensi salutem. Aliud vero exemplum Vindebon. collect. 5 signatum num.
But the edition of Isidore, likewise cited by Merlinus, points to that exemplar which, in this epistle as also in some others, agrees with the readings of collection 24. Since, moreover, the codices hitherto known were similar to those which agree upon the see of Ravenna, doubt could be raised only concerning the name of the bishop. But we ourselves have found two ancient books of Vienna, in which the name of Leo is indeed retained, but the episcopal see differs greatly. For the Viennese exemplar, which we have said elsewhere to contain the purer Spanish collection, in its title indicates Leo of Arbona, and in the inscription: 'Leo to Leo, bishop of Arbona, greeting.' But another Viennese exemplar of collection 5, marked with number.
175:69
42, cui aliqout epistolæ insertæ fuerunt ex collectione Hispanica, hunc titulum suggerit: Ad Leomen Narbonensem episcopum. 2.
42, into which some epistles had been inserted from the Spanish collection, suggests this title: 'To Leo, bishop of Narbonne.' 2. But that in so great a variety of codices and collections the solution might be easier, we have observed that there is a twofold source whence this epistle was taken, namely the Spanish collection, from which the authors of the Isidorian collections 12, 20, 21, 22, and 23 derived this epistle, and another exemplar, from which the author of collection 24, Merlinus, and Sichardus took the same. For the variants which, on re-reading the epistle itself, we found in these same manuscripts, showed this twofold origin. Since, moreover, as regards the name of the episcopal see, several codices of the former origin marking Ravenna agree with all the manuscripts.
175:70
Vindeb.
of the other source, there is no doubt to be entertained concerning the see of Ravenna. And this is confirmed above all by the fact that the two Viennese codices which dissent labour under an evident error. For the bishopric of Arbona, which is read in the Viennese Spanish manuscripts, is unknown; and Narbonne at this time was held not by Leo, but by Rusticus, to whom we shall see another, later epistle was addressed. Nor let it disturb anyone that the first Viennese codex comprises the purer Spanish collection. For although it is thus far purer, in that it did not receive the emendations introduced into the Gallican codices, yet it is most faulty, and betrays its fault clearly enough in that very inscription of the bishopric of Arbona, which no one will find.
175:71
1 vel 2, a cap.
But this error is demonstrated more evidently by the more ancient and more correct Spanish codices which the author of the Breviary of the Canons of the Spanish Church, published by Cardinal de Aguirre, employed, a manuscript exemplar of which Breviary we have found among the Vatican codices, number 4887. For this work, written at the close of the seventh century—as Father Coustant also proved in his preface to the Epistles of the Roman Pontiffs, number 150—is a Breviary of the Spanish collection, which the Spanish author took from Spanish codices without doubt. And in it, in book IV, titles 30 and 35, two titles are cited from the following epistle, which in both places is cited in these words: 'The epistle of Leo to Leo of Ravenna, title 1 or 2, from chapter.'
175:72
73, quo quidem capite in collectione Hispanica sequens epistola discribitur. Igitur de Ravennatis sedis nomine, in quo puriores et vetustiores codices Hispanici aliique inde profecti cum aliis mss. ex alio fonte deductis conveniunt, ambigi nequit. 3. Cum porro de epsiscopatu Ravennate constet, Neonis nomen amplectendum Ravennates catalogi de monstrant; neque enim inter episcopos hujus sedis per hoc tempus invenitur ullus Leo. Hac autem in re vetusti catalogi episcoporum Ecclesiæ Revennatis difficultatem afferent: vetusti, inquam qui apud Angellum a Bacchinio prium editum legi possunt;
七十三,在西班牙彙編中,這一標題之下記載了下一封書信。因此,關於拉溫納主教座的名稱——在這一點上,較純正、較古老的西班牙抄本以及由此衍生的其他抄本,與源自另一來源的其他手稿相一致——是不容置疑的。第三,既然確定此事涉及拉溫納主教職,拉溫納的主教目錄便顯示應當採納尼奧(Neo)之名;因為在此時期這座主教座的諸位主教中,根本找不到任何一位名叫良(Leo)的。然而在此事上,拉溫納教會諸主教的古老目錄卻帶來一項困難——我是指那些古老的目錄,即巴基尼烏斯首次刊行、可在阿涅盧斯著作中讀到的那些;
73, and in this heading the following letter is described in the Hispanic collection. Concerning, then, the name of the see of Ravenna — in which the purer and more ancient Hispanic codices and the others derived from them agree with other manuscripts drawn from another source — there can be no doubt. 3. Since, moreover, it is established that this concerns the bishopric of Ravenna, the catalogues of the bishops of Ravenna show that the name of Neo is to be embraced; for no Leo whatever is found among the bishops of this see during this period. But in this matter the ancient catalogues of the bishops of the Church of Ravenna raise a difficulty — the ancient ones, I say, which can be read in Agnellus, first edited by Bacchinius;
175:73
for the more recent ones in Rubeus and Ughellus, although in the present matter they do not stand in the way, nevertheless departed from the ancient order at will, so as to reconcile with certain preconceived opinions some monuments discovered later. But in those ancient catalogues no Leo at all is found as a bishop of this age; while Neo is made the predecessor of St. Peter Chrysologus, whereas from this letter he ought to be later. Now, in order that this difficulty may be removed, two things must be distinguished in these catalogues: the order of the bishops, and the time and deeds ascribed to them. The order of the ancient catalogues, insofar as, for the bishops of the earlier centuries, it was derived from the most ancient diptychs preserved in each of the Churches, is to be retained, unless something altogether evident compels otherwise.
175:74
II observationum in sacra cardinalis Norisii opera cap. 7, num 3, tom IV, pag.
But the time and deeds assigned to individual bishops — since they could not be taken from the diptychs, in which only the names of the bishops were recorded — depend on the discretion of medieval authors, or even on certain common preconceptions, which in matters of antiquity are to be reckoned of the least value. Hence many little fables of this kind are found sometimes inserted into such catalogues, which are rejected by the reckonings of the learned, and other uncertain or contradictory things are repeatedly detected, when more reliable ancient monuments come to light. Since this has been ascertained in the catalogues of other Churches, so it has been most evidently proved by us above all in those of Ravenna, in Book II of the Observations upon the sacred works of Cardinal Noris, chapter 7, number 3, volume IV, page
175:75
915, ubi etiam ostendimus pugnantibus epsicoporum ordine,et rebus ac tempore episcopis tributis, satius esse de errore in rebus ac tempore perperam ascriptis, quam in episcoporum ordine suspicari. 4. Ordo episcoporum Ravennatum hujus ævi in Angello et reliquis antiquis Ecclesiæ Ravennatis scriptoribus hic est: Ursus, Petrus, Neo, Exuperantius. Joannes, Petrus. Cum autem Joanni tribuant privilegium Valentiani III, sedcundo Petro hujus successori ascribunt quæ de S. petro Chrysologo certa sunt. Ilis vero obstant tria monumenta posterius edita: primum epistola Leonis ad Neonem, quæ episcopo Petri Chryso logi successori congriut;
九百一十五頁;我們在那裡也說明了:當主教的次序,與歸給諸主教的事蹟及年代相衝突時,寧可懷疑錯誤在於被誤加的事蹟與年代,而非在於主教的次序。第四,此時代拉溫納諸主教的次序,在阿涅盧斯及拉溫納教會其他古代作者筆下如下:烏爾蘇斯、伯多祿、尼奧、埃克蘇佩蘭提烏斯、若望、伯多祿。然而,既然他們將瓦倫提尼安三世的特權歸給若望,便把關於聖伯多祿·金言確鑿之事歸給其繼任者第二位伯多祿。但有三項後來刊行的史料與此相牴觸:第一,良致尼奧的書信,此信正合於身為伯多祿·金言繼任者的那位主教;
915, where we also showed that, when the order of the bishops and the deeds and times assigned to the bishops are in conflict, it is better to suspect error in the deeds and times wrongly ascribed than in the order of the bishops. 4. The order of the bishops of Ravenna of this age, in Agnellus and the other ancient writers of the Church of Ravenna, is this: Ursus, Peter, Neo, Exuperantius, John, Peter. But since they ascribe to John the privilege of Valentinian III, they attribute to the second Peter, his successor, the things which are certain concerning St. Peter Chrysologus. Against these, however, three monuments published later stand in the way: first, the letter of Leo to Neo, which suits the bishop who was successor of Peter Chrysologus;
175:76
second, the letter of Pope Simplicius to John, bishop of Ravenna, who obtained that see after Peter and Neo; third, the Roman synods under Symmachus, in which another Peter of Ravenna is found subscribed. Observing these things, Father Bacchinius, in order to loose the threefold knot, had recourse to two devices. First, he supposed that Leo's letter was sent not to Neo of Ravenna, but to Ravennius of Arles, to whom other letters of the same pontiff were given during this period, since it is established that the Gauls were devastated by Attila, and that captives were led away thence, who returned to their homeland, as is related in this letter.
175:77
Then, in order to satisfy the two other monuments, he believed that two bishops must be added to the said catalogues — namely, one John, who lived under Simplicius, and a third Peter, who lived under Symmachus — as if Agnellus and the other writers of the ancient catalogues had confused two Johns and two Peters into the John surnamed Angeloptes and the second Peter. These things a man must introduce quite arbitrarily who does not suspect that things and times were wrongly assigned. 5. To place Ravennius of Arles under the superscription of Leo's letter fights against the testimony of all the codices.
175:78
Not only were the Gauls devastated by Attila, but he also penetrated into Italy itself as far as the Po, beyond which river the province of Ravenna, and even part of the diocese, extended. What of the fact that this letter, from its context, appears to be encyclical, addressed to many, so that no special reason need be sought for Ravenna? Moreover, the addition of the two bishops John and Peter would be probable, if no other means of reconciling everything were available. But when some certain error exists in the catalogues, and it can be healed by the mere emendation of the deeds and times — which were established from the discretion of authors as adventitious, or from prejudices — the order of the bishops, which took its origin from the most ancient diptychs, is not to be abandoned or disturbed by additions.
175:79
By this rule, sufficiently evident, which will be found most useful in the other catalogues of other Churches, you will discover that in the present matter the whole difficulty and confusion introduced from the catalogues proceeds from this: that things which ought to have been assigned to the first Peter of Ravenna were ascribed to the second; for thus they attributed an earlier age to Neo and the rest. But if this error be corrected, and the first Peter — not the second — be believed to be St. Peter Chrysologus, at once everything will be found healed and to agree perfectly. For he it will be who sent the famous letter to Eutyches. To him then succeeded Neo, to whom the holy Pontiff wrote the following letter.
175:80
Then, after Exuperantius, the successor of Neo, John under Simplicius, and finally another Peter under Symmachus, follow most fittingly. If Agnellus and the authors of the ancient catalogues had seen these monuments, we have no doubt that, the order of the bishops being preserved, they would have reconciled the same monuments in like manner, as Rubeus and Ughellus did; and thus the true age of Neo would be confirmed from the very same sources. But the ignorance of the monuments, which then prevailed, cannot prejudice the certain testimony of the codices, which inscribe this letter to Neo of Ravenna.
175:81
Frequenter quidem in diversarum ambiguo quæstionum titubantia fratrum corda, Spiritu Dei instruente, solidavimus, responsionisformam, vel ex sanctarum Scripturarum disciplinis,velex Patrum 1408 regulis colligentes; sed nuper in synodo novum et inaud itum antea genus consultationis exor tum est. Nam quorumdam fratrum suggestione comperi. mus, aliquos captivorum.ad sedes suas libere re deuntes, qui scilicet in captivitatem illa ætate deve nerint, quæ nullius rei firmam potuerat habere notitiam, remedium quidem implorare baptismatis;
誠然,每當弟兄們的心因種種疑難問題的困惑而動搖時,我們常藉天主聖神的教導堅固他們,或從聖經的教訓、或從眾教父的規範中,蒐集答覆的形式。但近來在會議中,興起了一種新奇的、前所未聞的諮詢。因為經某些弟兄的提示,我們得知:有些俘虜自由返回家鄉——即那些在幼年、尚不能對任何事有確實認識的年齡便淪為俘虜者——他們懇求領受聖洗的補救;
Frequently indeed, when the hearts of the brethren wavered amid the doubt of diverse questions, we have, by the instruction of the Spirit of God, given them firmness, gathering the form of our reply either from the teachings of the Holy Scriptures or from the rules of the Fathers. But recently, in synod, a new and hitherto unheard-of kind of consultation arose. For, at the suggestion of certain brethren, we learned that some of the captives, returning freely to their homes — those, that is, who had fallen into captivity at that age which could have had no firm knowledge of anything — do indeed implore the remedy of baptism;
175:82
but whether they received the mystery and sacraments of that same baptism, they cannot recall, owing to the ignorance of infancy; and therefore, under this uncertainty of a hidden recollection, their souls are brought into peril, while, under the appearance of caution, that grace is denied to them which is not bestowed precisely because it is thought to have been bestowed. Since therefore the dread of certain brethren not unreasonably hesitated to grant the sacraments of the Lord's mystery to such persons, we received in the synodal assembly, as we have said, the form of a consultation of this kind, which, examining it more diligently, we resolved to treat with careful reasoning according to the judgment of each, that by employing the knowledge of many we might arrive more surely at the truth.
175:83
Eadem ergo, quæ (tl) in sensum nostrum divina inspiratione venerunt,frequens etiam fratrum firmarit assensio. In primis itaque providere 1407 uebenlus, ne durn spectem quamdam cautionis tenemus, damnum regenerandarum incidamus animarum.
The same things, therefore, which came into our understanding by divine inspiration, the frequent assent of the brethren also confirmed. First of all, therefore, we ought to take care lest, while we hold to a certain appearance of caution, we incur the loss of souls to be regenerated. For who is so given over to his own suspicions as to declare that to be true which, when all manifestation is lacking, he suspects from a doubtful opinion? Since, therefore, neither does he who is desirous of regeneration remember himself to have been baptized, nor can another testify concerning him, who does not know him to have been consecrated, there is nothing in which sin could creep in; since in this respect of his own conscience neither is he guilty who is consecrated, nor he who consecrates.
175:84
Scimus quidcm inexpiabile esse facinus, quoties juxta hæreticorum damnata a sanctis Patribus instituta, cogitur aliquis lavacrum, quod regenerandis semel tributum est, bis subirc, apostolica reclamante doctrina, qUID nobis unam praedicat in Trinitate Deitatem, unam in fide confessionem,unum in baptismate sacramentum (Ephes. IV, 5).
We know indeed that it is an inexpiable crime whenever, according to the practices of heretics condemned by the holy Fathers, anyone is compelled to undergo twice the washing which was bestowed once for the regenerated — the apostolic doctrine crying out against it, which proclaims to us one Godhead in the Trinity, one confession in faith, one sacrament in baptism (Eph. IV, 5). But in this case nothing of the sort is to be feared, since it cannot come into the crime of repetition; for it is altogether unknown whether it was ever done. And therefore, whenever such a person shall come to hand, first examine with careful inquiry, and over a long time — unless perhaps the final end be imminent — investigate whether there is absolutely no one who by his testimony can assist the ignorance of the one who knows not.
175:85
And when it shall have been established that this person, who needs the sacrament of baptism, is being hindered by an empty suspicion alone, let him approach undismayed to obtain that grace, of which he knows there is no trace in himself. Nor let us fear to open the gate of salvation to him whose entrance is never proved to have taken place before. CHAP. II. — But if it shall have been established that someone was baptized by heretics, toward such a one let the sacrament of regeneration in no way be repeated; but let only that be conferred which was lacking there, so that through the episcopal imposition of hands he may obtain the power of the Holy Spirit. This matter, dearest brother, we wish to come to the knowledge of all of you generally, lest, while more than is right is feared, the mercy of God be denied to those desiring to be saved.
175:86
Data nono kalendas Novembris, consulatu Majoriani Augusti. 1. Quesnellus rationibus judicio Tillemontii valde exilibus sequentem datam prodidit circa an. 442, 443 et 444.
Given on the ninth day before the Kalends of November, in the consulship of Majorian Augustus. 1. Quesnel, on grounds judged very slight by Tillemont, put forward the following date, about the years 442, 443, and 444; whereas Sirmond and Baluze, though bringing forward no document, fixed it to the year 452. Quesnel conjectured that they thought so because they supposed that in this letter, where mention is made of those who were captured by the enemy in infancy, reference is had to that devastation which the Huns brought upon the Gauls in 451. But he contends that the passage of this letter is to be referred not to the incursion of the Huns, but to the persecution of the Vandals, who, having gained possession of Africa under Genseric, attacked the Catholics; for in inquiry 18 the following is set forth:
175:87
Concerning those who came from Africa or from Mauritania, and know not in what sect they were baptized. Then, the Vandal persecution being described, which was brought upon the Christians in Africa after the year 439, he supposes that on this occasion not a few betook themselves to Gaul, concerning whom there is mention in this same letter; and therefore he believes it to have been given about the indicated years 442, 443, and 444, in which that persecution raged. 2. But first we bring forward an evident argument, by which this letter is shown to be later even than the year 445 itself. Hermes, who brought Rusticus's letter to Leo, is called a deacon in the inscription of the Church of Narbonne, reprinted by Quesnel in his notes. But this same inscription Quesnel, with Pagi agreeing, [assigns] to the year 445, no.
175:88
24 et 25, adversus Baluzuium optime interpretatur, et rectissime insculptam probat an 445. Porro idem Hermes in exordio epistolæ Leonis ad Rusticum Archidiaconus dicitur. Hæc ergo epistola post eam incriptionem seu post an. 445 exarata fuit, cum Hermes a diaconatu ad archidiachonatum provectus fuisset. 3. Dein licet Africana Vandalorum persecutio efferbuerit post an. 439, Mauritania tamen in Romanorum potestate perstitit usque ad Valentiniani mortem, quæ incidit in an. 455.
24 and 25, most rightly interprets against Baluze, and most correctly proves it to have been inscribed in the year 445. Moreover, the same Hermes, in the opening of Leo's letter to Rusticus, is called archdeacon. Therefore this letter was composed after that inscription, that is, after the year 445, when Hermes had been advanced from the diaconate to the archdiaconate. 3. Then, although the African persecution of the Vandals blazed up after the year 439, Mauritania nevertheless remained in the power of the Romans until the death of Valentinian, which fell in the year 455. Therefore, if those who came from Mauritania into Gaul crossed over for the sake of persecution, as Quesnel supposes, that must be placed after the year 445. 4.
175:89
But to blow away Quesnel's conjecture, and to establish the true time of this letter, other clearer and more luminous facts are supplied from Rusticus's own Inquiries. For not only in inquiry 18 is there mention of those who came from Africa or from Mauritania, but also in inquiry 17 of those who as little children were captured by the enemy, and afterward came to the Roman world; in inquiry 19 of those who as little children were captured by the heathen, and came to the Roman world while still young men. Granted that the case of inquiry 18 concerns those who withdrew themselves from Africa into Gaul for some reason in the time of the Vandal persecution, yet the cases of inquiries 17 and 19 cannot belong to the same matter:
175:90
for here are indicated those who as little children were captured by the enemy and those heathen; assigned outside the Roman empire, and at last, while still young men, returned into the Roman world, that is, into the Roman empire; and of these some [came] into the province of Narbonne, on whose account the inquiries were put forward by Rusticus. Therefore it is not a question of Africans exiled or fugitive for the sake of persecution, nor of Vandals, who were not heathen but Arians. We must therefore understand the Huns and other barbarian heathen, the same being the enemies of the Romans, who, after they had ravaged the Gauls, carried off with them from the same lands boys as captives.
175:91
Hunni pariter adversus Gothos purgnarunt in Galliis an. 437 et 439.
Now their famous incursion into the Gauls, and into the province of Narbonne itself, is celebrated, which Jerome mentions in his letter to Ageruchia in the year 409. But if the question had been about little children captured at this time, Rusticus would hardly, it seems, have written about the year 442, in inquiry 19, that they came to the Roman world while still young men. The Huns likewise fought against the Goths in Gaul in the years 437 and 439. But then they were auxiliaries of the Romans, not enemies. Rusticus, however, speaks of heathen enemies, and of captives who, while still young men, returned from among the enemy into the Roman world. More justly, therefore, is understood the incursion of the Huns into Gaul in the year 451, when they fought, not as auxiliaries, but as enemies, against Aetius the Roman general.
175:92
But if Rusticus's inquiries are believed to be understood of little children captured in this war, then, in order to leave a fitting interval in which those same little children, captured by the heathen, might return as young men to their homeland, this letter cannot be fixed to the year 452. 5. It seems more probable, however, that it should be placed about the year 458. For, first, in two letters of the year 458 — one, letter 159, to Nicetas of Aquileia, chapter 5; the other, letter 166, to Neo of Ravenna, chapter 1 — mention occurs of Romans returning to their own from the captivity of the infidels, some of whom had cast doubt about baptism, about things offered to idols, others, just as is read in the letter to Rusticus of Narbonne.
175:93
6. Dein in epistola ad Neonem, c. 1. Leo ait: Nuper in sunod novum et inauditum antea genus consultationis exortum est.Nam quorumdam fratrum suggestione comperimus aliquos captivorum ad sedes suas libere redeuntes, qui scilicet in captivitatem illa ætate devenerint, quæ nullius rei ferme poterat habere notitiam, remedium quidem implorare baptismalis; sed utrum ejusdem mysterium baptismatis ac sacramenta perceperint, in fantiæ inscientia non posse remimisci.
Since, moreover, all these letters suit the captives who had been taken under Attila, king of the Huns, when he was devastating Italy and the Gauls, then indeed the letter to Rusticus, no less than the two others, is most justly recognized to have been written about the same year 458. 6. Then, in the letter to Neo, chapter 1, Leo says: Recently, in synod, a new and hitherto unheard-of kind of consultation arose. For at the suggestion of certain brethren we learned that some of the captives, returning freely to their homes — those, that is, who had fallen into captivity at that age which could have almost no knowledge of anything — do indeed implore the remedy of baptism; but whether they received the mystery and sacraments of that same baptism, they cannot recall, owing to the ignorance of infancy.
175:94
Quomodo in eadem epist. Nov. an.
This question is the very same which Rusticus of Narbonne proposed. But how could Leo, in the year 458, in letter 166 to Neo, have affirmed this to be a new and hitherto unheard-of kind of consultation, if the same question had long since been proposed to him by Rusticus? How, in the same letter 166, could he have added that a longer and more diligent discussion had been necessary in resolving it, if he had long since resolved it in like manner in the letter to Rusticus? It is therefore perceived that Neo, or rather some other person who gave occasion for the sending of the letter to Neo, wrote to Leo about this question earlier than Rusticus; and therefore this letter to Rusticus is known to have been composed after the ninth day before the Kalends of November of the year
175:95
258, quo litteræ ad Neonem datæ fuerunt. Hanc igitur epistolam litteris ad Neonem subnectimus, eo quod posteriorem esse nihil ambigimus: ut ne tamen hoc eadem an. 458 scriptam affirmare velimus, cum seribi potuerit aliquanto post. Non multo tamen post exarata dicenda est: siquidem Hermes, qui in hac epistola appellatur Archi diaconus, vivo adhunc Rustico biterrensibus episcopus datus fuit, a quibus cum non fuerit receptus, Narbonam rediit, et hac de re idem Rusticus et Hermes litteras ad Leonem dedere, ut ex Hilari paæ epist. 8 colligere licet. His autem ut congruum tempus tribuatur, ante Leonis mortem, quæ contigit an. 461, Hermes ad Biterrensem cathedram promotus videtur sub an. 460;
四五八年,致尼奧的書信即發於該年。因此,我們把這封書信附於致尼奧的書信之後,因為我們毫不懷疑它是較晚的;然而並非要斷言它就寫於同一四五八年,因為它可能寫得稍晚些。不過也不可說它寫得晚了許多;因為在此書信中被稱為總執事的赫爾墨斯,是在魯斯提庫斯仍在世時被立為貝濟耶(Béziers)人的主教的;而當他未被那裡的人接納時,便返回納爾榜,就此事同一位魯斯提庫斯與赫爾墨斯致函於良,如從教宗希拉里第八號書信可推知。但為給這些事分配一段合宜的時間,在良於四六一年去世之前,赫爾墨斯似乎是在約四六〇年被擢升至貝濟耶主教座的;
458, on which the letter to Neo was given. This letter, therefore, we append to the letter to Neo, because we do not at all doubt that it is later; yet not so that we would wish to affirm it to have been written in the same year 458, since it could have been written somewhat later. It must not, however, be said to have been composed much later; since Hermes, who in this letter is called archdeacon, was given as bishop to the people of Béziers while Rusticus was still alive; and when he had not been received by them, he returned to Narbonne, and concerning this matter the same Rusticus and Hermes sent letters to Leo, as may be gathered from letter 8 of Pope Hilary. But so that a fitting time may be allotted to these things, before the death of Leo, which occurred in the year 461, Hermes seems to have been promoted to the see of Béziers about the year 460;
175:96
hæc autem epistola, Hermete adhunc archidiacono Romæ agente, scripta serius dicenda est an. 459. 7. His autem de tempore hujus epistolæ præmissis, manifestum fit quam sint inanes duæ Quesnelli conjecturæ, quibus cum animdverterit aliquot ex iis dubiis quæ proposuit Rusticus decisa fuisse in conciliis Arausicano I, Vasensi I, et Arelatensi II, aiterutrum not. 1 colligit: Scilicet vel Rusticus ad Leonem scripsisse, antequam difficiles quæstiones in conciliis supradictis ventilarentur et cnodorentur: supervacaneum enim vide retur et præter consuetudinem Gallicanam, ut post soluta in pluribus comprovincialibus, aut majoribus etiam synodis dubia, alia de eisdem consultatio haberetur;
但此書信是在赫爾墨斯仍於羅馬擔任總執事之時,故必須說它寫得較晚,於四五九年。第七,既已先陳述關於此書信年代的這些事,凱斯內爾的兩項臆測便顯得何其空洞。他既見到魯斯提庫斯所提出的某些疑問已在第一屆奧朗日會議、第一屆瓦松會議及第二屆亞爾會議中裁決,便在附註一中推斷二者之一:其一,魯斯提庫斯是在那些疑難問題於上述諸會議中被討論並解決之前致函於良——因為在若干省級、甚至更高等的會議中已解決諸疑之後,竟再就同樣問題進行另一次諮詢,這似乎多此一舉,也違反高盧的慣例;
but this letter, while Hermes was still acting as archdeacon at Rome, must be said to have been written rather later, in the year 459. 7. But these things concerning the time of this letter having been premised, it becomes manifest how empty are the two conjectures of Quesnel, by which, since he had observed that some of those doubts which Rusticus proposed had been decided in the First Council of Orange, the First of Vaison, and the Second of Arles, he concludes one or the other in note 1: namely, either that Rusticus wrote to Leo before those difficult questions were ventilated and untied in the aforesaid councils — for it would seem superfluous, and contrary to Gallican custom, that, after doubts had been resolved in several provincial, or even greater synods, another consultation should be held about the same;
175:97
or else, if Rusticus's letter did not precede these synods, it is not to be thought to recede much from their date; but perhaps Rusticus judged that he ought not to abide by their statutes, both because in many points a harsher discipline appeared, and because there was some grudge between himself and Hilary, bishop of Arles, by whose authority and presidency the canons had been framed, on account of the great authority of this man over the Churches of Gaul, which obscured the splendor of the metropolitan of Narbonne and of the other metropolitan bishops. The first is recognized as utterly false in respect of the time of this letter. But the Second Council of Arles, which is destitute of every chronological mark, is wrongly believed to have been held in Rusticus's age:
175:98
for it presents a collection of the canons of earlier synods, proper to the plan of St. Caesarius of Arles; so that P. Sbaraglia rightly proved this council to have been celebrated by Caesarius — which we can confirm from the manuscript Gallican collections, which we have examined in the Vatican and Veronese libraries, where this synod is placed immediately before the Councils of Agde and the Second of Orange convened by Caesarius at the beginning of the sixth century. Of the reason which Quesnel adds we shall speak presently. But the other, as to the grudge between Rusticus and Hilary, is likewise evidently fabricated.
175:99
For at the time of this letter, when Rusticus wrote to Leo, there could be no grudge for Rusticus with Hilary, who had long before departed from among the living — especially since, by Leo's decree, the boundaries of the ecclesiastical provinces were now certain, and the rights of each metropolitan, now established, were peacefully preserved. The true reason, therefore, why Rusticus wrote to Leo about these doubts also, which had been defined in the Gallican synods, was this: that by the authority of the Apostolic See a more certain definition might be furnished.
175:100
Hinc vero etiam patet non alienum fuisse a consuetudine episcoporum Galliæ, post soluta in conciliis Gallicanis dubia, Romanam cathedram consulere, eo quod ex majorum traditione didicerint quantum præstet hujus auctoritas atque sententia, quantamque in rebus dubiis certitudinem pariat. 8. Ex constituto etiam hujus epistolæ tempere falsa deteguntur illa duo, idem Quesmellus in confir mationem anni abs se asserti conferre posse existimavit. Primo enim intelligamus gesta quæ in episcoporum honoratorumque examine ob Sabiniani et Leonis presbyterorum causam confecta initio epistolæ memorantur non pertinere ad synodum Arausicanam I an. 441 neque ad Vasensem I an.
Hence it is also clear that it was not foreign to the custom of the bishops of Gaul, after doubts had been resolved in the Gallican councils, to consult the Roman chair, because from the tradition of their forefathers they had learned how much this authority and judgment avails, and how great a certainty it produces in doubtful matters. 8. From the established time of this letter, those two things are also detected as false, which the same Quesnel thought he could bring forward in confirmation of the year asserted by him. For, first, let us understand that the proceedings which are mentioned at the beginning of the letter, drawn up in the examination of bishops and men of honor on account of the case of the presbyters Sabinianus and Leo, do not pertain to the First Council of Orange in the year 441, nor to the First of Vaison in the year
175:101
Hinc Baluzius in nova Conciliorum collectione. Narbonense concilium, in quo eorum presbyterorum causa cognita fuerit, jure astruxit, et solum perperam istud affixit anno 452.
442, in which, as Quesnel himself observes, Rusticus was not present as bishop of those presbyters, but to another assembly — perhaps that of Narbonne — held a little before this letter to Rusticus, that is, about the year 458. Hence Baluze, in his new collection of Councils, rightly built up a Council of Narbonne, in which the case of those presbyters was examined, and only wrongly fixed it to the year 452.
175:102
Then, since this letter to Rusticus was written so late, that dejection of spirit, by which the same bishop, troubled by the occasion of scandals, signified to Leo that he greatly longed for release from the labors of the episcopate, fell not upon the beginning of his episcopate, nor upon his youth, as Quesnel thought, but upon his old age, when, heavy with years, he was drawing near to death. 9. Now it remains to say something about the codices. We have found this letter in the manuscripts of seventeen collections — namely, 1, 3, and the rest up to 13, and also in 18 and 21 up to 24, and besides in a peculiar and most ancient manuscript of the chapter of Verona, 58.
175:103
Duobus autem modis hæc in ejusmodi collectionibus præferutur, In omnibus enim collectionibus, posterioribus Dionysio ipsæ Rustici inquisitiones desiderantur. Dioysius scilicet omissis inquisitionibus,ipsarum loco titulos epistolæ præfixit, quibus nonnumquam duas Leonis responsiones in unum minus apte copalavit, ut suo loco notabimus. Hos eosdem Dionysii titulos tantum nacti sumus in codicibus aliarum posteriorum collectionum Hispanica, Hadrianeæ, etc., quæ hanc epistolam e Dionysio recepisse noscuntur. Hos titulos nos cum Quesnello in præmissa synopsi exhibebimus. Inquisitiones vero, sine quibus plerumque Leonis responsa intelligi nequeunt, Sirmondus primus edidit.
But this letter is presented in two ways in collections of this kind. For in all the collections later than Dionysius, Rusticus's inquiries themselves are lacking. Dionysius, that is, having omitted the inquiries, prefixed in their place the titles of the letter, by which he sometimes joined together two of Leo's replies into one less aptly, as we shall note in its place. These same titles of Dionysius we have found only in the codices of the other later collections — the Hispanic, the Hadrian, etc. — which are known to have received this letter from Dionysius. These titles we shall exhibit, along with Quesnel, in the synopsis prefixed. But the inquiries, without which Leo's replies for the most part cannot be understood, Sirmond first edited.
175:104
Eas nos in quatuor collectionibus mss. Dionysio antiquioribus reperimus, scillicet in cod. Vat. Reginæ collect. 1, in Vat. et Barber. collect. 3, in Lucensi collect. 4 in Vindebon. collect. 5, ac tandem in peculiari ms. Veron. 58. Ita præter codices posteriorum collectionum, quæ inquisitionibus carent, sex præstantis sima diversæ originis exemplaria inquisitionibus prædita nobis præsto fuere, cum Quesnellus duo tan tum unius collectionis 5 invenire potuerit.
We have found these in four manuscript collections older than Dionysius — namely, in the codex of Vatican Regina, collection 1; in the Vatican and Barberini, collection 3; in the Lucca, collection 4; in the Vienna, collection 5; and finally in the peculiar manuscript of Verona, 58. Thus, besides the codices of the later collections, which lack the inquiries, six most excellent exemplars of diverse origin, furnished with the inquiries, were at hand for us, whereas Quesnel could find only two of a single collection, 5.
175:105
Epistolas fraternitatis tuæ,quas Hermes archidiaconus tuus detulit, libenter accepi, diversarum quidem causarum connexione multiplices,sed non ta patientiæ legentis onerosas, ut aliquid carum in ter concurrentes undique sollicitudines fuerit prae. termissum. Unde totius sermonis tui allegatione concepta,et gestis quæ in episcoporum honoratorumque examine confecta sunt,rccensitis, Sabi.
The letters of your fraternity, which Hermes your archdeacon delivered, I received gladly, manifold indeed through the interweaving of diverse causes, yet not so burdensome to the patience of the reader that anything of them was passed over amid the concerns crowding in on every side. Whence, the plea of your whole discourse having been grasped, and the proceedings, which were drawn up in the examination of bishops and men of honor, having been reviewed, [concerning] Sabi-

nianus and Leo the presbyters, we have understood that confidence in your action was lacking to them, and that no just complaint remains to those who of their own accord withdrew themselves from the disputes once begun. Concerning them, what form and what measure of justice you ought to keep, I leave to your own moderation; yet advising, by the exhortation of charity, that you ought to apply spiritual medicine to the healing of the sick; and, as Scripture says: Be not overmuch just (Eccle. VII, 17), that you should act more mildly with those who, in zeal for chastity, seem to have exceeded the measure of vengeance; lest the devil, who deceived the adulterers, should exult over the avengers of adultery... But I marvel that your charity is troubled by the adversity of scandals arising on any occasion to such a degree,

that you say you prefer release from the labors of the episcopate, and would rather pass your life in silence and leisure than remain in those things which have been committed to you. But since the Lord says: Blessed is he who shall have persevered unto the end (Matt. XXIV, 13), whence will blessed perseverance come, if not from the virtue of patience? For, according to the apostolic preaching, all who wish to live godly in Christ shall suffer persecution (II Tim. III, 12).

And this persecution is not to be reckoned as consisting only in that which is carried out against Christian piety by sword or fire, or by any tortures whatsoever, since a dissimilarity of manners, and the contumacy of the disobedient, and the malignant darts of tongues, supply the savagery of persecutions; by which conflicts, since all the members are always assailed, and no portion of the godly is free from temptation — so that neither leisure nor labors are without their perils — because amid the waves of the sea, will the ship steer its course if the pilot depart? Who will guard the sheep from the ambushes of the wolves, if the shepherd's care do not keep watch (John X, 12)?
175:109
Quis denique latronibus obsistet et furibus, si speculatorem in prospectu explorationis locatum,abintentione sollicitudinis amorquietisnbducat ? Permanendum ergo est in opere credito et in labore suscepto.
Who, finally, will withstand robbers and thieves, if love of quiet should draw the watchman, stationed on the lookout of vigilance, away from the intention of solicitude? We must therefore remain in the work entrusted and in the labor undertaken. Justice must be steadfastly held, and clemency kindly bestowed. Let sins be held in hatred, not men. Let the proud be rebuked, the weak borne with; and what in sins must be more severely chastised, let it be punished not with the mind of one raging, but of one healing. And if a more vehement tribulation shall press upon us, let us not so take fright, as though we were resisting that adversity by our own strength; for since both our counsel and our fortitude is Christ, and without Him we can do nothing (John XV, 5), through Him we can do all things.

Et iterum: Hæc, inquit, loculus sum uobis, ut in me pacem habeatis. In hoe autem mundo tribulationem habebitis; sed bono animo estote, quia ego vici mundum (Joan. xv,, 33).
He who, confirming the preachers of the Gospel and the ministers of the sacraments, says: Behold, I am with you all days, even unto the consummation of the world (Matt. XXVIII, 20). And again: These things, He says, I have spoken to you, that in me you may have peace. But in this world you shall have tribulation; yet be of good cheer, for I have overcome the world (John XVI, 33). Since these promises are without doubt manifest, we ought to be weakened by no scandals, lest we appear ungrateful to the election of God, whose helps are as powerful as His promises are true.

But concerning the consultations of your charity, which your archdeacon delivered written out separately, what ought to be thought would more conveniently be inquired concerning each point among persons present, if the opportunity of your presence should come to us. For since certain interrogations seem to exceed the measure of diligence, I understand them to be more fitted to conversations than to writings. Because, just as there are certain things which can by no reasoning be overturned, so there are many things which ought to be tempered either according to the consideration of ages or according to the necessity of circumstances — that condition always being observed, that in those things which shall have been either doubtful or obscure, we should know that to be followed which is found neither contrary to the evangelical precepts nor opposed to the decrees of the holy Fathers.

RESPONSUM.- Nulla ratio sinit utinterepiscopos habeantur qui (ll) nec a clericis sunt electi, nec a plebibus sunt expetiti, nec a provincialibus episcopis cum metropolitani judicio consecrati.
Response. No reason permits that those be reckoned among the bishops who were neither elected by the clergy, nor sought by the people, nor consecrated by the provincial bishops with the judgment of the metropolitan. Hence, since a question often arises concerning an honor wrongly received, who would doubt that nothing ought to be attributed to these men which is not shown to have been conferred upon them? But if any clerics have been ordained by these pseudo-bishops in those churches which belonged to their proper bishops, and their ordination was carried out by the consent and judgment of those presiding, it can be held valid, so that they remain in those same churches. Otherwise, that appointment is to be held void which is founded neither on a place nor secured by an authority.

It is foreign to ecclesiastical custom that those who have been consecrated in the priestly honor or in the rank of the diaconate should, for any crime of theirs, receive the remedy of penance through the laying on of hands: which without doubt descends from apostolic tradition, according to what is written, 'If a priest sin, who shall pray for him?' (Lev.). Hence for such fallen ones, in order to merit the mercy of God, a private withdrawal is to be sought, where satisfaction, if it be worthy, may also be fruitful for them. Response. The law of continence is the same for the ministers of the altar as for bishops and priests, who, when they were laymen or lectors, were lawfully able both to take wives and to beget children.

But when they have arrived at the aforesaid ranks, what was permitted began to be no longer permitted to them. Hence, so that the carnal marriage may become spiritual, it behooves them neither to dismiss their wives, and to have them as though not having them, so that both the charity of the marriage may be preserved and the works of wedlock may cease. Response. Not every woman joined to a man is a man's wife, for neither is every son a father's heir. But the covenants of marriage are legitimate among the freeborn and among equals; the Lord himself having established this very thing (Gen. 2:24) far before the beginning of Roman law existed. Therefore a wife is one thing, a concubine another; just as a handmaid is one thing, a free woman another. For which reason the Apostle also, to make manifest the distinction of these persons,
175:115
testimonium ponit ex Genesi, ubi dicitur Abrahae: Ejice ancillam el filium ejus: non enim hæres erit filius ancillæ cuna filio meo Isaac (Galat. IV, 30; Gen. XXI, 10).
adduces a testimony from Genesis, where it is said to Abraham, 'Cast out the handmaid and her son: for the son of the handmaid shall not be heir with my son Isaac' (Gal. 4:30; Gen. 21:10). Hence, since the fellowship of marriage was so constituted from the beginning that, besides the joining of the sexes, it held in itself the sacrament of Christ and the Church (Eph. 5:32), there is no doubt that that woman does not pertain to matrimony in whom the nuptial mystery is shown not to have been present. Therefore a cleric of any place, if he has given his daughter in marriage to a man who has a concubine, is not to be understood as though he had given her to a married man; unless perhaps that woman seem both to have been made freeborn, and legitimately dowered, and honored by public nuptials.

Response. Those women joined to men by a father's decision are without fault, if the women who were kept by men were not in matrimony. Response. Since a wife is one thing and a concubine another, to cast the handmaid from the bed and to receive a wife of assured free birth is not a doubling of marriage but an advance of honor. Response. The negligence of such persons is to be blamed, but not utterly abandoned: so that, roused by frequent exhortations, they may faithfully carry out what they have of necessity sought. For no one is to be despaired of while he is set in this body: because sometimes what the diffidence of age postpones is accomplished by more mature counsel. Response. The cause of these is to be reserved to the judgment of God, in whose hand it lay that the death of such should be deferred even to the remedy of communion.

RESP. - Aliud quidem est debita justat reposcere, aliud propria perfectionis amore contemuere.
But with those dead we cannot commune, with whom while living we did not commune. Response. This dissembling can be not from contempt of the remedy, but from fear of offending more gravely. Hence the penance which has been deferred, when it shall have been more earnestly sought, let it not be denied, so that in whatever way the wounded soul may attain to the medicine of indulgence. Response. It is one thing indeed to demand back just debts, another to disregard them out of love of one's own perfection. But he who asks pardon for unlawful things ought to abstain even from many lawful things, since the Apostle says, 'All things are lawful to me, but not all things are expedient' (1 Cor. 6:12). Hence if a penitent has a cause which perhaps he ought not to neglect, he better seeks an ecclesiastical than a secular judgment.

The quality of the gain either excuses or accuses the trader, for there is both an honorable profit and a base one. Nevertheless it is more profitable for a penitent to suffer losses than to be bound by the perils of trade, because it is difficult that sin not intervene in the commerce between buyer and seller. Response. It is altogether contrary to the ecclesiastical rules, after the performance of penance, to return to secular soldiery, since the Apostle says, 'No one warring for God entangles himself in secular affairs' (2 Tim. 2:4). Hence he is not free from the snares of the devil who has wished to entangle himself in worldly soldiery.

Response. One set in adolescence, if under the urging either of the fear of death or the danger of captivity he performed penance, and afterward, fearing a lapse of youthful incontinence, chose the union of a wife lest he incur the crime of fornication, seems to have done a pardonable thing, if besides his spouse he has known no one at all. In this, however, we do not establish a rule, but estimate what is more tolerable. For according to true understanding nothing better befits him who has performed penance than persevering chastity both of mind and of body. Response. The purpose of a monk, undertaken by his own decision or will, cannot be forsaken without sin. For what one has vowed to God, he ought also to render (Deut. 23; Ps. 49:14).

Hence he who, having left the profession of the solitary life, has slipped down to soldiery or to marriage, is to be purged by the satisfaction of public penance: because although the soldiery be innocent and the marriage can be honorable, to have deserted the choice of the better things is a transgression. Response. Maidens who, not compelled by a parent's command, but by their own spontaneous decision, have taken up the purpose and habit of virginity, if they afterward choose marriage, they prevaricate, even if consecration did not follow; of whose gift they would surely not be defrauded, if they remained in their purpose.
175:121
If no indications exist among relatives or household members, none among clerics or neighbors, by which those about whom inquiry is made may be shown to have been baptized, it must be arranged that they be reborn: lest they manifestly perish, in whom, since what was done is not shown, reason does not permit it to seem repeated. Response. Those who can remember that they came to church with their parents can recollect that they received what was given to their parents. But if this too is foreign to their own memory, it seems that what is not known to have been conferred should be conferred upon them, because no rashness of presumption intervenes where there is the diligence of piety.
175:122
These do not fail to know that they are baptized, but they profess that they do not know of what faith were those who baptized them: hence, since in whatever manner they received the form of baptism, they are not to be baptized; but by the laying on of hands, with the power of the Holy Spirit invoked (which they could not receive from heretics), they are to be joined to the catholics. Response. If they have used only the banquet of the gentiles and food offered to idols, they can be purged by fasts and the laying on of hands: so that, thenceforth abstaining from things sacrificed to idols, they may be able to be partakers of the sacraments of Christ. But if they have either adored idols, or been contaminated by homicides or fornications, they ought not to be admitted to communion except through public penance.
175:123
I.—Magna indignatione commoveor, et multo dolore contristor,quod quosdam ex vobis comperi ita esse apostolicae traditionis oblitos, et studio sui erroris intentos, ut præter paschalem festivitatem, cui solaPen tecostes solemnitas comparatur, audeant sibimet, non aliqua humanae infirmitatis necessitate cogente, sed sola indisciplinati arbitrii libertate, jus baptismatis vindicare, et in natalibusmartyrum, quorum finis aliter honorandus est quam dies Dominicæ passionis, regenerationis celebrare mysteria,ac sine ullis spiritualium 1430 eruditionibus præparationum, ita rudibus etimperitis tradere sacramentum, ut circa renovandos nihil doctrinae ecclesiasticæ,nihil in exorcismis impositio manuum, nihil ipsa jejunia,quibus vetus homo destruitur,operentur;
一。——我懷著極大的義憤而激動,也懷著極深的悲痛而憂傷,因為我察知你們中有些人竟如此忘卻使徒的傳統,一味固執於自己的謬誤,以致除逾越節慶典(惟有五旬節的隆重可與之相比)之外,竟敢擅自——並非為任何人性軟弱之必要所迫,而僅憑無紀律之私意的放任——僭取施洗之權,並在殉道者的紀念日(他們的離世當以不同於主受難日的方式來尊崇)舉行重生的奧蹟;且未經任何屬靈的準備教導,就這樣把聖事草率地授予無知未學之人,以致對那些將受重生者,教會的道理毫無施行、驅魔中的覆手毫無運用、連那藉以摧毀舊人的禁食本身也毫無作用;
I. I am moved with great indignation and saddened with much sorrow, because I have found some of you so forgetful of apostolic tradition, and so bent upon the zeal of their own error, that besides the paschal festival, to which only the solemnity of Pentecost is compared, they dare to claim for themselves the right of baptism—not compelled by any necessity of human weakness, but by the sole license of undisciplined caprice—and to celebrate the mysteries of regeneration on the birthdays of the martyrs, whose end is to be honored otherwise than the day of the Lord's Passion, and, without any spiritual instructions of preparation, to hand over the sacrament to the rude and unskilled in such a way that concerning those to be renewed nothing of ecclesiastical doctrine, nothing in the exorcisms the laying on of hands, nothing the fasts themselves by which the old man is destroyed, may operate;
175:124
nor in so great a mystery of human salvation let any exception be made of that day on which the very gift of being reborn was instituted. We admonish therefore, and—not without peril to the state of those who do this—we solemnly protest, that this presumption be ceased from, and that you confer this highest and most powerful grace of God only on the Paschal and Pentecost day upon those who desire and believe: there remaining at any time the consideration of graver necessity and of dangers, according to which it may be needful to give aid; lest weakness, constrained by mortal condition, be defrauded of the necessary deliverance:
175:125
CAP. II.—Illam etiam contra apostolicam regulam præsumptionem, quam nuperagnovi a quibusdam illicita usurpatione committi,modis omnibus cODstituo 8ubmoveri.
while, the reverence of only two festivals being preserved (as we have said before), it must be guarded, on account of many dangers, that regeneration through the priest of the Lord be not denied to anyone either in desperate sickness, or in the incursion of hostility, or in the fear of shipwreck. But if anyone, after this interdict, shall be detected in the same usurpation, he shall incur the punishment worthy of his obstinacy: since he shows that he has pursued base gain rather than the worship of religion. Chapter II. That presumption also, against the apostolic rule, which I have lately learned to be committed by some through unlawful usurpation, I decree by all means to be removed.
175:126
Namely, that in the penance which is required of the faithful, a written profession set down in a booklet concerning the kind of each single sin be not publicly recited, since it suffices that the guilt of consciences be disclosed to the priests alone by secret confession. For although the fullness of faith may seem laudable which, for the fear of God, does not fear to blush before men, yet, because not all men's sins are of such a kind that those who ask penance do not fear to publish them, let so objectionable a custom be removed, lest many be barred from the remedies of penance, while they either blush or fear to have their deeds disclosed to their enemies, by whom they might be struck down under the constitution of the laws.
175:127
For that confession suffices which is offered first to God, then also to the priest, who approaches as an intercessor for the offenses of penitents. For then at last more can be roused to penance, if the conscience of the one confessing is not made public to the ears of the people. Given the day before the Nones of March, Ricimer being consul.
