81:1
Idem Augustus Joanni P. P. Sancimus neminem ad episcopaium ordinari, nisi et in aliis rebus utilis et optimus sit, et neque melieri cohabitet, neque liberorum existat pater, sed loco uxoris, adbaereat quidem et continens sit circa sanctissimam Ecclesiam; loco vero liberorum, omnem Christianum et orthodoxum habeat populum: cognoscens sic ab initio ea quae de successione Deo amabilium episcoporum sunt nos disposuisse, et cum ejusmodi cogitatione processisse nostram legem; et eos qui praeter haec quid faciunt, aut fecerunt, omni episcopatu indignos esse;
同一位奧古斯都致禁衛軍長官約翰。我們敕定:除非一個人在其他各方面既有用又卓越,並且既不與婦人同居,也不是兒女之父,否則不得被任命為主教;而要以至聖的教會代替妻子、緊緊依附並守貞節;以全體基督徒與正信的子民代替兒女:須知我們從起初便已如此規定了關於神所眷愛之眾主教繼承的事項,且我們的法律乃懷著這樣的考量而制定;又凡違背這些事而行、或曾行任何此類之事者,皆不配任何主教職分;
The same Augustus to John, Praetorian Prefect. We decree that no one be ordained to the episcopate unless he be both useful and excellent in other respects, and unless he neither cohabit with a woman nor be the father of children, but in place of a wife, let him cleave to the most holy Church and be continent; and in place of children, let him have all the Christian and orthodox people: knowing that thus from the beginning we have ordained those things which concern the succession of the bishops beloved of God, and that our law has proceeded with such a consideration; and that those who do, or have done, anything contrary to these things, are unworthy of all episcopate;
81:2
for those who, after this our constitution, shall make any men bishops contrary to its force, or shall have dared to be made such, shall neither be reckoned among the bishops nor remain in sacred orders, but, being expelled from these, shall give place to others for ordination, to those who are in the first place most diligent, and moreover in all things pleasing to God. Given on the fourth day before the Kalends of September, at Constantinople, after the consulship of Lampadius and Orestes, 531.
