The same Augustus to Demosthenes, Praetorian Prefect. The things which have been sanctioned by us concerning dice, or (as they call it) 'cottis', and concerning their prohibition — let it be lawful for the bishops most beloved of God both to scrutinize and to restrain them, if they take place, and to reduce the offenders to modesty through the most distinguished governors of the provinces, and the fathers and defenders of the cities. Given on the tenth day before the Kalends of October, at Constantinople, in the consulship of Decius, in the year 529.
