113:1
The Lord of majesty is set forth as crucified, whereas, if you regard the property of the alternate substance, the divine loftiness being sequestered from all the contumelies of the cross, the lowliness of the assumed body alone felt the passion. For after (II Cor. V, 19) God, reconciling the world to Himself in Christ, was united to the creature which He assumed, oftentimes man is signified through God, and God through man—as is that saying: When the Son of man shall come in His majesty (Matt. XXV, 31), since no one doubts that majesty befits God rather than man; which the Psalmist also, expounding of God, says: And you shall see Him in His majesty. And the prophet Malachi, surnamed 'Angel' for the perspicuity of his sayings, concerning the Lord's suffering on the cross.
113:2
Si affigit, inquit, homo Deum suum, quia vos configitis me (Malach. III, 8).
'Does a man crucify his God,' he says, 'because you crucify me' (Mal. 3:8). And yet, as no one will deny, it was not God but a man who was fastened to the cross.
