18:1
Undc, etiamsi pignus reliquiarum sacrae crucis putamus esse vobiscum, a sancto tamen Æliæ urbis antistite hanc specialiter munificentiam credimus expetendam.
Hence, even though we think that a pledge of the relics of the holy Cross is with you, yet we believe this munificence is to be sought especially from the holy bishop of the city of Aelia [Jerusalem]. For he, preserving by the administration of the place the true and inviolable purity of that sacred thing, is thus able to impart to us a desirable gift, so as to free us from all doubt of hesitation. On this matter I most earnestly beg, by this ministering page, that your apostolate would grant to the bearer letters to the bishop of the aforesaid church: so that a firm ground may come to us by a twofold blessing — which either the counsel-worthy authority of your see, pre-eminent among the churches of the world, will supply, or the kindness of that man, when besought, will extend.
