Since the flesh (Wis. 9:15) — as food not yet purged by the appointed measure of death — weighs down the mind that ponders many things, and hinders the sight that discerns but few, yet the dignity of things to come shines through in certain deeds, and the splendor of immortal secrets gleams even upon mortal eyes by rare revelation. But this only for those whom flesh alone, and not carnality, holds, and whom worldly cohabitation does not defile, being clean of heart. Just as heavenly converse was once granted to the law-giving prophet; and he was so far endowed with a certain vision of divine glory, that something horned upon his smooth brow seemed to have been brought forth not by harshness, but by brightness.
