71:1
tantum servulus vester domni nostri recenset, quantum st ntio: nondum plene detersa inaequalitate, attentos reJdit et anxios: ut pro contemplatione pietatis illius quam festis specialius optare consucvimus, sufiicere nobis commoditatem vestram pro omni solemnium jucunditate credamus. Unde servans post cultum Natalis dominIci solitæ sollicitudinis servitutem, tota nosse vos voti ambitione desidero, si decus commune quod Viennensis ecclesiola praesenli vice non meruit, vel Lugdunensium populorum gaudia duplicavit.
Your little servant reckons of our lord only so much as he knows: the unevenness of health, not yet fully cleared away, renders us watchful and anxious; so that, in place of the contemplation of that devotion which we have been especially accustomed to desire at festivals, we may believe your well-being sufficient for us in lieu of all the gladness of the solemnities. Wherefore, keeping up, after the observance of the Lord's Nativity, the service of my wonted solicitude, I long with the whole ambition of my prayer to know whether the common honor which the little church of Vienne did not on this present occasion deserve has at least doubled the joys of the peoples of Lyons.
71:2
For if you, by Christ's favor, write back that you were able to go forth to church, or that you fulfilled your customary devotion, then, made sharers in the gladness of our neighbors, we declare that we shall feast upon the hearing of it, when we learn that those to whom your presence was granted have been refreshed by the sight.
