145:1
When the Lord was consulted in the Gospel as to what He would decree concerning the firmness of the marriage bond, He said: «They are now not two, but one flesh. Wherefore I say to you, What God has joined together, let not man put asunder» (Matt. 19:6). Behold what the Apostle says concerning marriage: «This is a great mystery; but I say to you, in Christ and in the Church» (Eph. 5:32). For assuredly from the lowliness of the example is born the loftiness of the mystery. If the bodily union is said to make one out of two, why should not one substance have made firm the whole Trinity? Or when we say that on earth it is not lawful to separate what God has joined through concord, with what peril should we wish to separate in the heavens what God has joined through nature?
To pass over now that which is written, that «of the multitude of believers there was one soul and one heart» (Acts 4:32): for their individual hearts, unanimity rendered into one heart, just as equality makes firm and unites the proper persons within the Trinity.
