68:1
Celebravimus vobiscum, divinitate propitia, vobiscum, inquam, non loco, sed animo, pauperculi Viennenses vestri paschale festivum. Si autem interrogetis et qualiter: quia vicinum quemquam, quia adesse facilius poterat, plus doleat defuisse. Nec tamen, cum ista deflemus, discrepare nos a vestra voluntate dicatis. Jam dudum ab illo, sancte credimus, affectus illic cohibet, non hinc despectus excludit. Unam in utraque civitate vestra ecclesiam perinde diligitis; sed pio patri, in quantum expedit, donec vos ad quamlibet sequi consentiat, adhæretis. Unde sicut jussum est, primum Deo de solemnitate, tum quod debetur solvimus Cæsari.
We have celebrated with you, by the favor of the Godhead—with you, I say, not in place but in spirit—we your poor little folk of Vienne, the paschal feast. But if you ask, and in what manner: it is because one grieves the more that someone near, who could more easily have been present, was absent. Yet do not say, when we lament these things, that we differ from your will. This long while—we holily believe—affection detains you there, contempt does not exclude you from here. You love equally one Church in each of your cities; but you cleave to the pious father, so far as is expedient, until he consents that you should follow us to whichever city. Whence, as it is commanded, first we render to God concerning the solemnity, then we pay what is owed to Caesar.

Vos de laetitia vestra et incolumitate sollicitis, licet Caesares sitis quod domnis exigitis, reddile pietati.
As for you, render to our devotion—we who are anxious about your joy and your safety—that which, though you be Caesars, you require of your lords.
