67:1
While others feast on the holy and serene delights of your presence, I sustain the barrenness of my longing more by the slenderness of a poor service than by reason. Whence after the festival—ever lovable to all indeed, but now singular to the people of Chalon—I have sent letters of a servile solicitude. Which, if they should strive to reach even the tiniest particle of your praises, would not even so sufficiently adorn the fact that it is permitted my humility to offer them, or pleases your regard to receive them. Conjecturing therefore, from the gladness of so many, that you are manifoldly glad, God being favorable, I ask that you make the paschal days for us by a happy return:
because, while in your absence a certain austerity of Lent lasts on for us, it is a solemn joy to have seen, even through the solemnity, a Christian prince dear to all Catholics, a most pious lord to his particular little servant.
