61:1
I received the letters of your Holiness at Easter indeed, but not paschal ones, displaying nothing at all of charity or of solicitude; but by them you were commanding that I consign our brother and fellow-priest Candidianus—whom I had commended as it were as my own—not only to the hearing of clerics, but even to that of laymen, by whom it is established that his deacon was handed over, for a civil case, to servile custody. And therefore, if you judge that all things concerning your clerics are to be believed on the testimony of laymen, write back. It will follow that, while we consult the knowledge of secular men on all things that come into rumor, we betray the liberty of the clergy.
Yet this, as it were out of your love, I presume to suggest and to admonish: that on account of trivial causes, and such as pertain not to God but to the world, not even laymen—not to say clerics—should be deprived of holy communion; for he knows not of what dignity communion itself is, who does not, all animosity being laid aside, both suspend it with great sorrow and restore it with the greatest haste.
