Besides these five books, and the sixth, which is usually appended, addressed to his sister Fuscina, no poem of Avitus has hitherto come forth; nor is it established that more poems of Avitus than these were of old known to Gregory of Tours and to Isidore. Yet the letter to his brother Apollinaris indicates that not a few other works on various subjects were written by him in verse. Of these there is no discussion for us in this place; but only of those books which, continuing the Mosaic history, pursue Exodus and the remaining parts of the Heptateuch, and are found under the name of Alcimus Avitus in certain libraries.
Although I would not deny that these belong to Avitus, yet I have observed them to be everywhere so rough and unpolished, and so teeming with errors in all the copies I have seen, that it would be a matter of religious scruple to bring to light a work which the author himself, unless I am mistaken, would prefer to be kept suppressed in such a condition. But whoever has a mind to learn the openings of the individual books will find them from the appended index.
