159:1
In Christ, God and man, not another but Himself: not two out of diverse things, but one Mediator out of both. The substance indeed is twofold, but the person is one. And if anyone should presume to sever this solidity by a duality, first there is the fact that he publicly professes against the sentence of the Apostle, who says: «One Mediator of God and men, Christ Jesus» (1 Tim. 2:5). Then he must needs choose, out of the two, that is, the divine and the human, which nature he would have this mediation to have undertaken its mysteries. If God alone is the Mediator, there is no other with whom He intercedes: if man alone, there is none who can prevail to reconcile. Join them, moreover, that there may be (2 Cor. 5:19) «God in Christ,» and it is «reconciling the world to Himself.»
He, namely, in whose presence the matter must be transacted, is Himself the one who transacts it: thus the same is sent, and the same returns; even as He Himself is judged, and He Himself shall judge.
