27:1
Dum sacra reliquiarum pignora, quibus per me Galliam vestram spiritali remuneratione ditastis, negare petentibus non præsumo, me quoque sanctorum patrocinia postulare ab irriguo vestri apostolatus fonte necesse esi. Quanquam etsi est adhuc apud nos de dono vestro, quod catholicae religionis debeat studio celebrari, etiam illud tamen convenit justæ devotionis inlelligi, ut directis liuerarii sermonis officiis alloquia illa captemus, quibus me pontificatus vester, vel praesentem monitis docuit, vel absentem intercessionibus acquisivit. Nec nunc paginae praesentis obsequium reperta opporlunitas complectitur;
While I do not presume to deny to those who ask the sacred pledges of relics, with which you have enriched your Gaul through me by a spiritual recompense, it is necessary that I too ask the patronage of the saints from the watering fountain of your apostolate. Although there is still with us something of your gift which ought to be celebrated with the zeal of the catholic religion, yet it also befits a just devotion to understand this: that by the offices of a written discourse directed to you we may catch those addresses by which your pontificate has either, when I was present, taught me by admonitions, or, when I was absent, won me by intercessions. Nor does the present opportunity embrace the full homage of this page;
我既不敢向求取者拒絕那些聖髑的信物——您藉我、以屬靈的酬報使您的高盧因之富足——那麼我也必須向您使徒之職那澆灌的泉源,求取眾聖徒的庇佑。誠然,儘管您所賜的餽贈中尚有當以公教信仰之熱誠加以敬奉之物在我們這裡,然而正當的虔敬也宜於明白此事:就是我們當藉呈上書信言辭之職分,捕捉那些話語——您的主教之職曾藉這些話語,在我在場時以勸誡教導我,在我不在時以代求得著我。如今所遇的機會,也不能盡述本頁的敬意;
27:2
In augmento namque ovium crescit custodia pastoralis.
but, with the deacon appointed as bearer to you, the venerable man Julian, we hasten in spirit to present ourselves to the head of the universal Church. For desire grows by the recollection of benefits: nor can those things ever be washed from my senses which, in your Italy, either the pontifical kindness or the royal courtesy bestowed upon us — since, after the intimacy to be preferred to the advantages of all munificence, because there it more freely loosed my return, thence it more tightly bound my affection. Let a more attentive prayer press on for what remains for your flock. For with the increase of sheep the pastoral guardianship grows.
27:3
Sacris nos apostolorum liminibus commemoratione assidua praesentantes, speciali dum vixero prædicatori vestro, ubi obtinuistis initium, impetrate profectum.
Presenting us with assiduous commemoration at the sacred thresholds of the apostles, obtain for your special preacher — while I live — advancement where you obtained the beginning. Frequent us with letters, as far as possibility or liberty allows, by which your teaching and your safety may flourish for us. And, as we hoped above, confer upon us the protections of venerable relics, to be sought by us: by the veneration of which we may merit to have both most blessed Peter always in power, and you always in your gift.
