1-16:16
Concerning being forbearing and serviceable to all and free from anger, the things he said are these: 'To the one who strikes your cheek, offer the other also; and the one who takes away your tunic or your cloak, do not prevent. Whoever is angry is liable to the fire. And to everyone who compels you to go one mile, go with him two. Let your good works shine before men, that, seeing them, they may glorify your Father who is in heaven.' For we ought not to retaliate, nor did he wish us to be imitators of the wicked, but by patience and gentleness he urged all to be led away from shame and from the desire for evil things. This we can demonstrate from many who have arisen among you: they changed from violent and tyrannical ways, having been overcome either by observing the constancy of their neighbors' lives, or by noticing the strange patience of fellow travelers who were defrauded, or by testing those with whom they did business. And concerning not swearing at all, but always speaking the truth, he commanded thus: 'Do not swear at all; but let your yes be yes, and your no, no; and whatever is more than these is from the evil one.' And that God alone must be worshiped, he persuaded by saying thus: 'The greatest commandment is: You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve, with all your heart and with all your strength, the Lord God who made you.' And when someone came to him and said, 'Good Teacher,' he answered, saying, 'No one is good except God alone, who made all things.' But those who are not found living as he taught—let it be known that they are not Christians, even though they speak with their tongue the teachings of Christ; for he said that not those who merely speak, but those who also do the works, shall be saved. For he said thus: 'Not everyone who says to me, Lord, Lord, shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. For whoever hears me and does what I say, hears him who sent me. And many will say to me, Lord, Lord, did we not eat and drink in your name, and do mighty works? And then I will say to them: Depart from me, you workers of lawlessness. Then there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when the righteous shall shine like the sun, but the unjust shall be sent into the eternal fire. For many will come in my name, outwardly clothed in sheep's skins, but inwardly being ravening wolves; by their works you shall know them. And every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and cast into the fire.' And we ask that those who do not live according to his teachings, but are called Christians in name only, be punished by you as well.
