3-127:1
And the other things likewise are spoken thus by the Lawgiver and the prophets. And I suppose I have said enough that, when my God says, 'God went up from Abraham,' or 'The Lord spoke to Moses,' and 'The Lord came down to see the tower which the sons of men had built,' or when 'God shut the ark of Noah from outside,' you must not suppose that the unbegotten God Himself came down or went up from anywhere.
For the ineffable Father and Lord of all things has neither come anywhere, nor walks, nor sleeps, nor rises, but remains in His own place, wherever that is, seeing keenly and hearing keenly, not with eyes nor ears, but by an indescribable power; and He surveys all things and knows all things, and none of us is hidden from Him; neither does He move, He who cannot be contained by place nor by the whole world, who indeed existed even before the world came to be.
How, then, could this One either speak to anyone, or be seen by anyone, or appear in the smallest portion of the earth—when even the people at Sinai were not able to behold the glory of Him who was sent by Him, nor was Moses himself able to enter into the tent which he had made, when it was filled with the glory from God; nor indeed could the priest endure to stand before the temple, when Solomon brought the ark into the house in Jerusalem which Solomon himself had built?
Neither Abraham, then, nor Isaac, nor Jacob, nor any other of men saw the Father and ineffable Lord of all things absolutely, and of Christ Himself, but that One who, according to His will, is both God His Son, and Angel from His ministering to His purpose—whom also He has willed to be born as man through the virgin, who also once became fire in His converse with Moses from the bush.
For unless we understand the Scriptures thus, it will follow that the Father and Lord of all things was not then in the heavens, when it was said through Moses: 'And the Lord rained upon Sodom fire and brimstone from the Lord out of heaven'; and again through David, when it was thus said: 'Lift up your gates, you rulers, and be lifted up, you eternal gates, and the King of glory shall come in'; and again when He says: 'The Lord said to my Lord: Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.'
