3-100:1
And what follows: 'But You dwell in the holy place, the praise of Israel,' signified that He was to do something worthy of praise and wonder, in that, after being crucified, He was to rise from the dead on the third day, which He has received from His Father. For that the Christ is called both Jacob and Israel I have shown; and not only in the blessing of Joseph and of Judah have I shown that the things concerning Him were proclaimed in mystery, but it is also written in the Gospel that He said: 'All things have been delivered to me by the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son, nor the Son except the Father and those to whom the Son reveals Him.'
He therefore revealed to us all things which by His grace we have understood from the Scriptures, having come to know Him as the firstborn of God and before all creatures, and the Son of the patriarchs, since, having been made flesh through the virgin of their race, He endured to become a man without form, without honour, and capable of suffering.
Whence also in His words He said, when He was discoursing that He was about to suffer, that 'The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the Pharisees and scribes, and be crucified, and on the third day rise again.' He called Himself, then, Son of man, either from His birth through the virgin, who was, as I said, of the race of David and Jacob and Isaac and Abraham, or because Adam was the father both of these who are reckoned and of those from whom Mary derives her descent. For we know that the fathers of children born to daughters are the fathers of those women's offspring.
For indeed one of His disciples, formerly called Simon, when he recognised Him to be the Son of God, the Christ, according to the revelation of His Father, He surnamed Peter. And having Him written down as the Son of God in the memoirs of His apostles, and calling Him Son, we have understood that He existed before all created things, having proceeded from the Father by His power and will—He who is also addressed in the words of the prophets, in one way and another, as Wisdom, and Day, and Dawn, and Sword, and Stone, and Rod, and Jacob, and Israel—and that He became man through the virgin, so that by the same way by which the disobedience that came from the serpent took its beginning, by this same way it might also receive its undoing.
For Eve, being a virgin and undefiled, having conceived the word that came from the serpent, brought forth disobedience and death; but the virgin Mary, having received faith and joy when the angel Gabriel brought her the good news that the Spirit of the Lord would come upon her and the power of the Most High would overshadow her—wherefore also the holy thing born of her is the Son of God—answered: 'Be it unto me according to your word.'
And through her was born this One concerning whom we have shown so many Scriptures were spoken—through whom God breaks down both the serpent and the angels and men who have become like him, but works deliverance from death for those who repent of their evil deeds and believe in Him.
