Φόρους δὲ καὶ εἰσφορὰς τοῖς ὑφ ὑμῶν τεταγμένοις πανταχοῦ πρὸ πάντων πειρώμεθα φέρειν, ὡς ἐδιδάχθημεν παρ αὐτοῦ. Κατ ἐκεῖνο γὰρ τοῦ καιροῦ προσελθόντες τινὲς ἠρώτων αὐτόν, εἰ δεῖ Καίσαρι φόρους τελεῖν. Καὶ ἀπεκρίνατο· Εἴπατέ μοι, τίνος εἰκόνα τὸ νόμισμα ἔχει; Οἱ δὲ ἔφασαν· Καίσαρος. Καὶ πάλιν ἀνταπεκρίνατο αὐτοῖς· Ἀπόδοτε οὖν τὰ Καίσαρος τῷ Καίσαρι καὶ τὰ τοῦ θεοῦ τῷ θεῷ. Ὅθεν θεὸν μὲν μόνον προσκυνοῦμεν, ὑμῖν δὲ πρὸς τὰ ἄλλα χαίροντες ὑπηρετοῦμεν, βασιλεῖς καὶ ἄρχοντας ἀνθρώπων ὁμολογοῦντες καὶ εὐχόμενοι μετὰ τῆς βασιλικῆς δυνάμεως καὶ σώφρονα τὸν λογισμὸν ἔχοντας ὑμᾶς εὑρεθῆναι. Εἰ δὲ καὶ ἡμῶν εὐχομένων καὶ πάντα εἰς φανερὸν τιθέντων ἀφροντιστήσετε, οὐδὲν ἡμεῖς βλαβησόμεθα, πιστεύοντες, μᾶλλον δὲ καὶ πεπεισμένοι, κατ ἀξίαν τῶν πράξεων ἕκαστον τίσειν διὰ πυρὸς αἰωνίου δίκας, καὶ πρὸς ἀναλογίαν ὧν ἔλαβε δυνάμεων παρὰ θεοῦ τὸν λόγον ἀπαιτηθήσεσθαι, ὡς ὁ Χριστὸς ἐμήνυσεν εἰπών· Ὧι πλέον ἔδωκεν ὁ θεός, πλέον καὶ ἀπαιτηθήσεται παρ αὐτοῦ
Taxes and tribute we everywhere try, before all others, to pay to those whom you have appointed, as we were taught by him. For at that time some came up and asked him whether one ought to pay taxes to Caesar. And he answered: 'Tell me, whose image does the coin bear?' And they said, 'Caesar's.' And again he replied to them: 'Render therefore the things of Caesar to Caesar, and the things of God to God.' Wherefore we worship God alone, but in other matters we gladly serve you, acknowledging you as kings and rulers of men, and praying that you may be found, together with your royal power, also to have sound judgment. But if you pay no heed even when we pray and lay everything openly before you, we shall suffer no harm, since we believe—rather, are convinced—that each man will pay the penalty by eternal fire according to the worth of his deeds, and will be required to give account in proportion to the powers he received from God, as Christ indicated when he said: 'To whom God has given more, of him shall more be required.'
至於賦稅與貢銀，我們照祂所教導的，無論在何處都竭力先於眾人，繳納給你們所派定的人。因為那時有些人前來問祂，當不當給凱撒納稅。祂回答說：「告訴我，這錢幣上有誰的像？」他們說：「是凱撒的。」祂又回答他們說：「這樣，凱撒的物當歸給凱撒，神的物當歸給神。」因此我們單單敬拜神，但在其餘的事上卻樂意服事你們，承認你們是人的君王與官長，並祈求你們連同你們王者的權能，也被發現有清明的判斷。但你們若連我們禱告、又把一切公開擺在你們面前時，仍漠不關心，我們也必不受損害，因為我們相信——更是深信——各人必照自己行為的價值，藉永火受刑，並要按所受於神的能力比例被追討交帳，正如基督所指明的：「神給誰多，向誰要的也多。」
