And Trypho said: "We do not understand this from the words just quoted; rather, that the one who appeared in the flame of fire was an angel, but the one who conversed with Moses was God—so that an angel and God, two beings together, were present in that vision at the time."
And I answered again: "Even if it happened then, my friends, that both an Angel and God were present together in the vision that came to Moses—as has indeed been demonstrated to you through the foregoing words—it will not be the Maker of all things who is the God who told Moses that He is the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob, but the One who has been shown to you as having appeared to Abraham and to Jacob, ministering to the will of the Maker of all things, and likewise serving His counsel in the judgment of Sodom. So that, even granting it is as you say—that there were two, an Angel and God—no one whatsoever, even one with a little sense, will dare to say that the Maker of all things and Father, leaving all that is above heaven, appeared in a tiny portion of the earth."
And Trypho said: "Since it has already been demonstrated beforehand that the One who appeared to Abraham, named God and Lord, received from the Lord who is in heaven the things brought upon the land of Sodom and inflicted them; even now, granted that an angel was present along with the God who appeared to Moses, we shall understand that the God who conversed with Moses from the bush was not the Maker of all things, but that One who was shown to have been manifested to both Abraham and Jacob, who is also called and understood to be the Angel of the God who is Maker of all things, because He announces to men the things from the Father and Maker of all."
And I again said: "Now then, O Trypho, I will demonstrate that in the vision of Moses this very same One alone, both called Angel and being God, appeared and conversed with Moses. For thus the Scripture says: 'And the Angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire out of the bush; and he sees that the bush is burning with fire, but the bush was not consumed. And Moses said: I will go over and see this great sight, why the bush is not consumed. And when the Lord saw that he was drawing near to look, the Lord called to him out of the bush.'"
"Just as, then, the Scripture says that the one who appeared to Jacob in his sleep was an angel, and then that this very angel who appeared in his sleep said to him, 'I am the God who appeared to you when you fled from the face of Esau your brother'; and as, in the case of Abraham, in the judgment of Sodom, it said that He as Lord brought the judgment from the Lord who is in heaven—so also here the Scripture, while saying that an Angel of the Lord appeared to Moses, and thereafter signifying that this very One is Lord and God, declares Him to be the same One whom it signifies, through many of the things spoken, to be ministering to the God above the universe, above whom there is no other."
