3-76:1
For when Daniel speaks of Him who receives the eternal kingdom as "like a son of man," does he not hint at this very thing? For to say "like a son of man" indicates that He appeared and became a man, yet declares that He did not come from human seed. And to call Him a stone cut out without hands proclaims the same thing in a mystery; for to say that He was cut out without hands shows that He is not a work of man, but of the will of the Father of all, God, who put Him forth.
And Isaiah's saying, "Who shall declare His generation?" showed that He has a lineage that cannot be declared; for no one who is a man born of men has a lineage that cannot be declared. And Moses' saying that He would wash His robe in the blood of the grape—is this not what I have often said to you that he prophesied in a veiled manner concerning Him? For he foretold that He would indeed have blood, but not from men—just as the blood of the vine was not begotten by man but by God.
And did not Isaiah, calling Him "the angel of great counsel," proclaim beforehand that He would become the very teacher of those things which He came and taught? For the great things which the Father had purposed both toward all the men who have become and shall become pleasing to Him, and toward those—men or angels alike—who departed from His will, this One alone taught openly, saying:
"They shall come from the east and the west, and shall recline with Abraham and Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven; but the sons of the kingdom shall be cast out into the outer darkness."
And: "Many shall say to me in that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not eat and drink and prophesy in Your name, and cast out demons?' And I will say to them, 'Depart from me.'" And in other words, by which He is about to condemn the unworthy not to be saved, He said He would say: "Depart into the outer darkness, which the Father has prepared for Satan and his angels."
And again in other words He said: "I give you authority to tread upon serpents and scorpions and centipedes, and over all the power of the enemy." And now we, who believe on our Lord Jesus who was crucified under Pontius Pilate, by exorcising in His name hold all the demons and evil spirits in subjection to us. For though it had been proclaimed in veiled manner through the prophets that the Christ would become subject to suffering and afterward would rule over all, yet He could be understood by no one, until He Himself persuaded the apostles that these things had been plainly proclaimed in the Scriptures.
For before being crucified He cried out: "The Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the scribes and Pharisees, and be crucified, and on the third day rise again." And David proclaimed that He would be begotten from the womb before the sun and moon, according to the will of the Father, and showed Him to be a mighty God and worthy of worship, being Christ.
