3-18:1
Since you have read, O Trypho, as you yourself confessed and said, the teachings of him who is our Savior, I do not think I have done anything out of place in also recalling, alongside the prophetic words, a few of his sayings.
"Wash yourselves, then, and even now become clean, and remove the wickedness from your souls," as God commands you to wash with this washing and to be circumcised with the true circumcision. For we too would have observed that fleshly circumcision, and the Sabbaths, and all the feasts, quite simply, had we not understood for what reason they were enjoined upon you also—that is, on account of your iniquities and your hardness of heart.
For if we endure to bear all that is wrought against us by wicked men and demons—even to things unspeakable, death and torments—praying that mercy may be shown even to those who treat us in such ways, and unwilling to repay anyone even in the slightest, as the new Lawgiver commanded us, how should we not also have observed those things which do us no harm—I mean fleshly circumcision and the Sabbaths and the feasts?
