Moreover, through Jacob the patriarch it was prophesied that there would be two comings of the Christ, and that at the first He would be subject to suffering, and that after His coming there would be neither prophet nor king among your race—so I added—and that the nations, believing in the suffering Christ, would look for Him to come again. The Holy Spirit had spoken these things in a parable and in veiled fashion, I said.
And I added that He had spoken thus: "Judah, your brothers shall praise you; your hands shall be upon the back of your enemies; your father's sons shall bow down to you. Judah is a lion's whelp; from a tender shoot, my son, you have gone up. Lying down he slept as a lion, and as a lion's whelp; who shall rouse him? A ruler shall not depart from Judah, nor a leader from his loins, until the things laid up for him shall come; and he himself shall be the expectation of the nations, binding his foal to the vine and his ass's colt to its tendril. He shall wash his robe in wine and his garment in the blood of the grape. His eyes shall be gladdened from wine, and his teeth white as milk."
Since, then, neither prophet nor ruler ever ceased among your race from the time it took its beginning until this Jesus Christ both came and suffered, you will not dare to assert it shamelessly, nor can you prove the contrary. For even while you say that Herod, under whom He suffered, was an Ascalonite, you nevertheless say that there was among your race a high priest; so that even then, while you had among you offerings being presented according to the Law of Moses and the other observances being kept, and while prophets had arisen in succession down to John—just as, even when your people were carried away to Babylon, the land being ravaged and the sacred vessels taken away, there did not cease among you a prophet who was lord and leader and ruler of your people—for the Spirit that was in the prophets also anointed and appointed your kings.
But after the manifestation and death of Jesus our Christ among your race, nowhere has a prophet arisen, nor is there one; moreover, your being under a king of your own has ceased, and besides this your land has been laid waste and left like a watchman's hut in a vineyard. And the word spoken through Jacob, "And He shall be the expectation of the nations," signified symbolically His two comings, and that the nations would believe in Him—which at last you can now see; for those from among all the nations who through faith in Christ have become godly and righteous, we look for Him to come again.
