And I will say also the words by which it is shown that God divided all the nations. And they are these: 'Ask your father, and he will tell you; your elders, and they will say to you. When the Most High divided the nations, as He scattered the sons of Adam, He set the bounds of the nations according to the number of the sons of Israel; and the Lord's portion became His people Jacob, the lot of His inheritance Israel.' And having said this, I added, saying that the Seventy expounded it: 'He set the bounds of the nations according to the number of the angels of God.' But since from this too my argument is in no way diminished, I have stated your interpretation.
And do you also, if you are willing to confess the truth, that we are more faithful toward God—we who were called by God through the despised and shame-laden mystery of the cross, for whose confession and obedience and piety penalties even unto death have been laid upon us by the demons and the host of the devil, through the ministry rendered to them by you—we endure all things rather than deny Christ even so far as a word, through whom we have been called to the salvation prepared beforehand by the Father.
You who were redeemed from Egypt with a high arm and a visitation of great glory, the sea being divided for you and becoming a dry road, in which He slew those who pursued you with very great power and glorious chariots, by flooding upon them the sea that had been made a road for your sakes; for whom a pillar of light shone, that you might have, beyond every other people in the world, a light proper to you, unfailing and never setting; for whom He rained down bread for food through heavenly angels, the manna, that you might not even need to bake bread; and the water at Marah was made sweet;
and a sign of Him who was to be crucified came to pass also in the case of the serpents that bit you, as I said before (God, before their proper times, anticipating in every respect to bestow the mysteries upon you, toward whom you are convicted of having ever been ungrateful); and through the type of the stretching out of the hands of Moses, and of the one surnamed Jesus warring against Amalek, concerning whom God said that what had taken place should be recorded, declaring that the name of Jesus should be set in your ears, saying that this is He who is to blot out the memorial of Amalek from under heaven.
And that the memorial of Amalek remains even after the son of Nun, is plain; but through Jesus the crucified, of whom those symbols too were proclamations beforehand of all things concerning Him—that the demons are to be utterly destroyed and to dread His name, and that all the principalities and kingdoms likewise are to view Him with dread, and that from every race of men those who believe in Him are shown to be God-fearing and peaceable—He makes manifest, and the things I have previously recounted, O Trypho, signify this.
And so great a flight of quail was given to you, when you desired flesh to eat, that they were beyond number to tell; for whom also water gushed forth from a rock, and a cloud followed for shade from the heat and for protection from the cold, announcing the manner and the foretelling of another new heaven; whose very thongs of their sandals did not break, nor did the sandals themselves grow old, nor were the garments worn out, but even those of the younger ones grew with them.
