3-93:1
For the things that are always and altogether righteous He sets forth, and all righteousness, in every race of men; and every race knows that adultery is evil, and fornication, and murder, and all other such things. And even if all commit them, yet they are not freed from the knowledge that they do wrong when they do these things—except those who, being filled with an unclean spirit and corrupted by upbringing and base customs and wicked laws, have lost their natural notions, or rather have quenched them or hold them in suspension.
For one can see that even such people do not wish to suffer the same things which they themselves inflict on others, and with hostile consciences reproach one another for the very things they do. Hence it seems to me to have been well said by our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, that all righteousness and godliness is fulfilled in two commandments; and these are: 'You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your strength, and your neighbor as yourself.' For the one who loves God with all his heart and with all his strength, being full of a godly mind, will honor no other god; and he would honor that angel too, if God so willed, namely the one who is loved by the Lord and God Himself. And the one who loves his neighbor as himself will wish for him the same good things he wishes for himself; and no one will wish evil things for himself.
These same things, then, the one who loves his neighbor would both pray for and work to bring about for his neighbor, just as for himself; and a man's neighbor is nothing other than the like-feeling and rational living being—man. So, all righteousness being divided in two—toward God and toward men—whoever, as the word says, loves the Lord his God with all his heart and with all his strength, and his neighbor as himself, would truly be righteous.
But you have never been shown to have either friendship or love toward God, or toward the prophets, or toward yourselves; rather, as is shown, you are found to be always idolaters and murderers of the righteous, so that you laid your hands even upon the Christ Himself, and to this day persist in your wickedness, cursing also those who prove that this One crucified by you is the Christ. And besides this, you deem it right to demonstrate that He was crucified as an enemy of God and accursed—which is the work of your irrational mind.
For though you have, from the signs that were wrought through Moses, the means to understand that this is He, you refuse to do so; and besides this, supposing us to be unable to give an account, you raise disputes; but it is rather what happens to you, for you yourselves are at a loss for arguments whenever you meet some vigorous Christian.
