Ὅταν δὲ τὰς λέξεις τῶν προφητῶν λεγομένας ὡς ἀπὸ προσώπου ἀκούητε, μὴ (??)π αὐτῶν τῶν ἐμπεπνευσμένων λέγεσθαι νομίσητε, ἀλλ ἀπὸ τοῦ κινοῦντος αὐτοὺς θείου λόγου. Ποτὲ μὲν γὰρ ὡς προαγγελτικῶς τὰ μέλλοντα γενήσεσθαι λέγει, ποτὲ δὲ ὡς ἀπὸ προσώπου τοῦ δεσπότου πάντων καὶ πατρὸς θεοῦ φθέγγεται, ποτὲ δὲ ὡς ἀπὸ προσώπου τοῦ Χριστοῦ, ποτὲ δὲ ὡς ἀπὸ προσώπου λαῶν ἀποκρινομένων τῷ κυρίῳ ἢ τῷ πατρὶ αὐτοῦ· ὁποῖον καὶ ἐπὶ τῶν παρ ὑμῖν συγγραφέων ἰδεῖν ἔστιν, ἕνα μὲν τὸν τὰ πάντα συγγράφοντα ὄντα, πρόσωπα δὲ τὰ διαλεγόμενα παραφέροντα. Ὅπερ μὴ νοήσαντες οἱ ἔχοντες τὰς βίβλους τῶν προφητῶν Ἰουδαῖοι οὐκ ἐγνώρισαν οὐδὲ παραγενόμενον τὸν Χριστόν, ἀλλὰ καὶ ἡμᾶς τοὺς λέγοντας παραγεγενῆσθαι αὐτὸν καί, ὡς προεκεκήρυκτο, ἀποδεικνύντας ἐσταυρῶσθαι ὑπ αὐτῶν μισοῦσιν
現在，每當你們聽見眾先知的話像是從某個身分發出時，不要以為這是受感動的先知們自己所說的，乃是那感動他們的神聖之道所說的。因為他有時是以預先宣告將要發生之事的口吻說話，有時是以萬有之主宰和父神的身分發言，有時是以基督的身分，有時是以眾民回應主或回應他父的身分發言——這也可以在你們自己的作家身上看見：作者只有一位，是他編寫了全部，卻引入眾人物來進行對話。擁有眾先知書卷的猶太人因不明白這一點，連基督降臨時也不認識他；不但如此，我們這些宣告他已降臨、並按所預言的證明他被他們釘十字架的人，他們也恨惡。
Now whenever you hear the words of the prophets spoken as though from a particular person, do not suppose that they are spoken by the inspired men themselves, but by the divine Word that moves them. For sometimes he speaks as one foretelling things that are to happen, sometimes he utters words as from the person of the Master and Father of all, God, sometimes as from the person of Christ, sometimes as from the person of peoples answering the Lord or his Father — just as can be seen also in the case of your own writers, where one is the author who composes the whole, but introduces persons who carry on the dialogue. The Jews, who possess the books of the prophets, failing to understand this, did not recognize Christ even when he came; but they also hate us who say that he has come and who prove, as had been foretold, that he was crucified by them.
