1-39:39
And whenever the prophetic Spirit speaks as foretelling the things that are to come, it says thus: "For out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the Lord out of Jerusalem; and he shall judge in the midst of the nations and shall rebuke many people; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks, and nation shall not take up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more." And that this has so come to pass, you can be persuaded. For from Jerusalem twelve men in number went forth into the world, and these unlearned, unable to speak skillfully, yet by the power of God declared to every race of mankind that they had been sent by Christ to teach all the word of God; and we who once slew one another not only do not make war against our enemies, but, that we may not lie or deceive those who examine us, we gladly confess Christ and die. For it would have been possible for us to act according to the saying "the tongue has sworn, but the mind is unsworn." It would indeed be a ridiculous thing if the soldiers enlisted and enrolled by you should prize their oath of allegiance to you above their own life, parents, country, and all their kin, though you can offer them nothing incorruptible — while we, who long for incorruption, should not endure all things in order to receive what we desire from him who is able to give it.
