And Trypho said: "You seem to me to have become, through much practice in discussion with many on all the matters under inquiry, ready on that account to answer everything that you may be asked. Answer me, then, first: how can you demonstrate that there is also another God besides the Maker of all things? And then you will also demonstrate that He consented to be born through the virgin."
And I said: "First grant me to speak some words from the prophecy of Isaiah, which were spoken concerning the going-before by which John, who became the Baptist and a prophet, went before our Lord Jesus Christ Himself." And he said: "I grant it."
And I said: "Isaiah, then, foretold thus concerning the going-before of John: 'And Hezekiah said to Isaiah: Good is the word of the Lord which He has spoken; let there be peace and righteousness in my days.' And: 'Comfort the people, O priests; speak to the heart of Jerusalem and comfort her, for her humiliation is fulfilled; her sin is loosed, for she has received from the Lord's hand double for her sins. The voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the ways of the Lord, make straight the paths of our God. Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low; and all the crooked places shall be made straight, and the rough way into smooth roads; and the glory of the Lord shall appear, and all flesh shall see the salvation of God, for the Lord has spoken.'"
"'The voice of one saying: Cry out. And I said: What shall I cry? All flesh is grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of the grass. The grass withers, and its flower falls away, but the word of the Lord abides forever. Go up onto a high mountain, you who bring good tidings to Zion; lift up your voice with strength, you who bring good tidings to Jerusalem. Lift it up, do not fear. Say to the cities of Judah: Behold your God; behold, the Lord comes with strength, and His arm comes with dominion. Behold, His reward is with Him, and His work before Him. As a shepherd He shall tend His flock, and with His arm He shall gather the lambs, and He shall comfort her who is with child.'"
"'Who has measured the water in His hand, and the heaven with a span, and all the earth in His fist? Who has set the mountains in a balance and the wooded glens in a scale? Who has known the mind of the Lord, and who has become His counselor that he should instruct Him? Or with whom did He take counsel, and who instructed Him? Or who showed Him judgment? Or the way of understanding, who made it known to Him? All the nations are as a drop from a bucket, and have been reckoned as the turning of a scale, and shall be reckoned as spittle. And Lebanon is not sufficient for burning, and its beasts are not sufficient for a whole burnt offering, and all the nations are as nothing, and have been reckoned for nothing.'"
