These things you suppose to have been spoken concerning the proselyte and the converts; but in truth they were spoken concerning us who have been enlightened through Jesus. For then Christ would have testified concerning them too; but now you become twofold more sons of Gehenna, as He Himself said. Not to them, then, were the things spoken through the prophets said, but to us, concerning whom the Word says: 'I will lead the blind in a way they did not know, and they shall tread paths they did not know. And I am witness, says the Lord God, and my servant whom I have chosen.'
To whom, then, does Christ testify? Plainly to those who have believed. But the proselytes not only do not believe, but blaspheme His name twofold more than you, and wish both to murder and to torture us who believe in Him; for in all things they are eager to be made like you.
And again in other words He cries: 'I the Lord have called you in righteousness, and will hold your hand and strengthen you, and I will set you for a covenant of a race, for a light of nations, to open the eyes of the blind, to bring out from bonds those who are bound.' Since these things too, O men, were spoken concerning Christ and concerning the enlightened nations. Or will you again say: He says these things concerning the Law and the proselytes?
And, as in a theatre, some of those who had come on the second day cried out: But what? Does He not say these things concerning the Law and those enlightened by it? And these are the proselytes.
No, said I, looking toward Trypho. For if the Law had the power to enlighten the nations and those who possess it, what need would there be of a new covenant? But since God proclaimed beforehand that He would send a new covenant and an eternal law and ordinance, we shall not understand it of the old law and its proselytes, but of Christ and His proselytes, namely us, the nations whom He has enlightened, as He says somewhere: 'Thus says the Lord: In an acceptable time I heard you, and in a day of salvation I helped you, and I gave you for a covenant of nations, to establish the land and to inherit the desolate inheritances.'
What, then, is the inheritance of Christ? Is it not the nations? What is the covenant of God? Is it not Christ? As He also says elsewhere: 'You are my Son, this day have I begotten You; ask of me, and I will give You nations for Your inheritance, and the ends of the earth for Your possession.'
