1-40:40
Hear too how it was foretold concerning those who would proclaim his teaching and announce his appearing, the aforementioned prophet and king having spoken thus through the prophetic Spirit: "Day to day pours forth speech, and night to night declares knowledge. There is no speech nor language where their voices are not heard. Their sound has gone out into all the earth, and their words to the ends of the inhabited world. In the sun he has set his tabernacle, and he, like a bridegroom coming forth from his chamber, will rejoice as a giant to run his course." In addition to these, we have thought it good and fitting to mention also other of the words prophesied through the same David, from which you can learn how the prophetic Spirit exhorts men to live, and how it foretells the gathering that took place against Christ by Herod the king of the Jews and by the Jews themselves and by Pilate your procurator among them with his soldiers; and that he was to be believed on by men of every race; and that God calls him Son and has promised to subject all his enemies to him; and how the demons, so far as in them lies, try to escape the authority of God the Father and Master of all and of his Christ; and how God calls all to repentance before the day of judgment comes. The words are these: "Blessed is the man who has not walked in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stood in the way of sinners, nor sat in the seat of the scornful; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in his law he will meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the streams of water, which will yield its fruit in its season, and its leaf shall not wither, and whatever he does shall prosper. Not so the ungodly, not so; but they are like the chaff which the wind drives away from the face of the earth. Therefore the ungodly shall not rise in the judgment, nor sinners in the counsel of the righteous; for the Lord knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the ungodly shall perish." "Why did the nations rage, and the peoples devise vain things? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers gathered together against the Lord and against his Christ, saying: Let us break their bonds and cast away their yoke from us. He who dwells in the heavens shall laugh them to scorn, and the Lord shall mock them; then he shall speak to them in his anger, and in his fury he shall trouble them. But I have been set as king by him upon Zion his holy mountain, declaring the decree of the Lord. The Lord said to me: You are my Son; today I have begotten you. Ask of me, and I will give you the nations for your inheritance, and the ends of the earth for your possession; you shall shepherd them with a rod of iron, you shall dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel. And now, kings, be wise; be instructed, all you who judge the earth. Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice in him with trembling. Lay hold of instruction, lest the Lord be angry, and you perish from the righteous way, when his wrath is quickly kindled. Blessed are all they who trust in him."
