Wherefore also Jacob, as I said before, being himself too a type of Christ, married the two bondmaids of his two free wives, and begot sons from them, in order that it might be foreshown beforehand that Christ would receive also all those in the race of Japheth who are from Canaan, equally with the free, and would have them as children and co-heirs—which we, being such, you are not able to understand, because you are not able to drink from the living fountain of God, but from broken cisterns that cannot hold water, as the Scripture says.
And the broken cisterns that hold no water are those which your own teachers have dug for you, as the Scripture also expressly says, teaching teachings, the precepts of men. And in addition to this they deceive both themselves and you, supposing that to those who are of the fleshly seed of Abraham, even though they be sinners and unbelieving and disobedient toward God, the eternal kingdom shall by all means be given—which things the Scriptures have shown not to be so.
For otherwise Isaiah would not have said: 'And unless the Lord of hosts had left us a seed, we should have become as Sodom and Gomorrah'; and Ezekiel: 'Even if Noah and Jacob and Daniel should ask for sons or daughters, it shall not be given them; but neither father for son nor son for father, but each shall perish in his own sin, and each shall be saved by his own righteous practice'; and again Isaiah: 'They shall look upon the limbs of the transgressors; their worm shall not cease, and their fire shall not be quenched, and they shall be a spectacle to all flesh.'
And our Lord, according to the will of the Father who sent Him and is Master of all things, would not have said: 'They shall come from the west and the east, and shall recline with Abraham and Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of the heavens; but the sons of the kingdom shall be cast out into the outer darkness.' And that those foreknown to be unrighteous, whether angels or men, become evil not by any fault of God's, but each is of such a kind as he shall appear by his own fault, I have demonstrated also in what went before.
