For neither did it happen in vain that the prophet Moses remained until evening in that posture, when Hur and Aaron held up his hands. For the Lord too remained almost until evening upon the tree, and toward evening they buried Him; then He rose on the third day. This was proclaimed through David thus: 'With my voice I cried to the Lord, and He heard me out of His holy hill. I laid me down and slept; I awoke, for the Lord sustained me.'

And through Isaiah likewise it was said concerning Him, by what manner He was to die, thus: 'I stretched out my hands to a disobedient and gainsaying people, to those who walk in a way that is not good.' And that He was to rise again, Isaiah himself said: 'His burial has been taken from the midst.' And: 'I will give the rich in return for His death.'

And again in other words David spoke concerning the passion and the cross in a mysterious parable, in the twenty-first Psalm, thus: 'They pierced my hands and my feet, they counted all my bones; they themselves looked and stared upon me. They divided my garments among themselves, and upon my clothing they cast lots.' For when they crucified Him, driving in the nails, they pierced His hands and feet; and those who crucified Him divided His garments among themselves, each casting lots according to the throw of the lot for that which he chose to take.

And this very Psalm you say was not spoken concerning Christ, being blind in all things, and not understanding that no one ever called king among your race had his feet and hands pierced while living, and died through this mystery, that is, by being crucified—except this Jesus alone.
