And that the demons contrived to set up the image of her called Kore over the springs of waters, calling her the daughter of Zeus, in imitation of what was said through Moses, you can understand from what has been said before. For Moses said, as we wrote before, "In the beginning God made the heaven and the earth. And the earth was invisible and unformed, and the Spirit of God moved over the waters." In imitation, then, of the said Spirit of God moving over the water, they said that Kore was the daughter of Zeus. And likewise, in their wickedness, they said that Athena was the daughter of Zeus, not from sexual union, but because—since they knew that God, having conceived the design through the Word, made the world—they said that Athena was the first conception; which we consider most ridiculous, to bring forward the form of a woman as an image of the conception. And likewise the actions of the others said to be sons of Zeus convict them.
