Ἐπειδὴ τοίνυν τὰ γενόμενα ἤδη πάντα ἀπεδείκνυμεν πρὶν ἢ γενέσθαι προκεκηρύχθαι διὰ τῶν προφητῶν, ἀνάγκη καὶ περὶ τῶν ὁμοίως προφητευθέντων, μελλόντων δὲ γίνεσθαι, πίστιν ἔχειν ὡς πάντως γενησομένων. Ὃν γὰρ τρόπον τὰ ἤδη γενόμενα προκεκηρυγμένα καὶ ἀγνοούμενα ἀπέβη, τὸν αὐτὸν τρόπον καὶ τὰ λείποντα, κἂν ἀγνοῆται καὶ ἀπιστῆται, ἀποβήσονται. Δύο γὰρ αὐτοῦ παρουσίας προεκήρυξαν οἱ προφῆται· μίαν μέν, τὴν ἤδη γενομένην, ὡς ἀτίμου καὶ παθητοῦ ἀνθρώπου, τὴν δὲ δευτέραν, ὅταν μετὰ δόξης ἐξ οὐρανῶν μετὰ τῆς ἀγγελικῆς αὐτοῦ στρατιᾶς παραγενήσεσθαι κεκήρυκται, ὅτε καὶ τὰ σώματα ἀνεγερεῖ πάντων τῶν γενομένων ἀνθρώπων, καὶ τῶν μὲν ἀξίων ἐνδύσει ἀφθαρσίαν, τῶν δὲ ἀδίκων ἐν αἰσθήσει αἰωνίᾳ μετὰ τῶν φαύλων δαιμόνων εἰς τὸ αἰώνιον πῦρ πέμψει. Ὡς δὲ καὶ ταῦτα προείρηται γενησόμενα, δηλώσομεν. Ἐῤῥέθη δὲ διὰ Ἰεζεκιὴλ τοῦ προφήτου οὕτως· (??)Συναχθήσεται ἁρμονία πρὸς ἁρμονίαν καὶ ὀστέον πρὸς ὀστέον, καὶ σάρκες ἀναφυήσονται. Καὶ πᾶν γόνυ κάμψει τῷ κυρίῳ, καὶ πᾶσα γλῶσσα ἐξομολογήσεται αὐτῷ. Ἐν οἵᾳ δὲ αἰσθήσει καὶ κολάσει γενέσθαι μέλλουσιν οἱ ἄδικοι, ἀκούσατε τῶν ὁμοίως εἰς τοῦτο εἰρημένων. Ἔστι δὲ ταῦτα·Ὁ σκώληξ αὐτῶν οὐ παυθήσεται, καὶ τὸ πῦρ αὐτῶν οὐ σβεσθήσεται. Καὶ τότε μετανοήσουσιν, ὅτε οὐδὲν ὠφελήσουσι. Ηοῖα δὲ μέλλουσιν οἱ λαοὶ τῶν Ἰουδαίων λέγειν καὶ ποιεῖν, ὅταν ἴδωσιν αὐτὸν ἐν δόξῃ παραγενόμενον, διὰ Ζαχαρίσυ τοῦ προφήτου προφητευθέντα ἐλέχθη οὕτως· Ἐντελοῦμαι τοῖς τέσσαρσιν ἀνέμοις συνάξαι τὰ ἐσκορπισμένα τέκνα, ἐντελοῦμαι τῷ βοῤῥᾷ φέρειν, καὶ τῷ νότῳ μὴ προσκόπτειν. Καὶ τότε ἐν Ἱερουσαλὴμ κοπετὸς μέγας, οὐ κοπετὸς στομάτων ἢ χειλέων, ἀλλὰ κοπετὸς καρδίας, καὶ οὐ μὴ σχίσωσιν αὐτῶν τὰ ἱμάτια, ἀλλὰ τὰς διανοίας. Κόψονται φυλὴ πρὸς φυλήν, καὶ τότε ὄψονται εἰς ὃν ἐξεκέντησαν, καὶ ἐροῦσι· Τί, κύριε, ἐπλάνησας ἡμᾶς ἀπὸ τῆς ὁδοῦ σου;Ἡ δόξα, ἣν εὐλόγησαν οἱ πατέρες ἡμῶν, ἐγενήθη ἡμῖν εἰς ὄνειδος
我們既已表明：凡已經發生的事，都在發生以前藉眾先知預先宣告了，那麼對於那些同樣被預言、卻尚未發生的事，我們也必須有信心，知道它們必定要成就。因為正如那些已成的事，雖被預先宣告而不被人明白，卻終究成就了，照樣那些尚未成就的事，縱然不被明白、不被相信，也必要成就。眾先知預先宣告了他的兩次降臨：一次是已經過去的，是作為無尊榮、能受苦的人；另一次，已被宣告：他要帶著榮耀、率領他的天使軍隊從諸天降臨，那時他也要叫凡曾活過之人的身體復活，使配得的人穿上不朽壞，卻把不義的人連同惡鬼魔一起，在永遠的知覺中投入永火。至於這些事也被預言將要發生，我們要加以說明。曾藉先知以西結這樣說：「骨節要與骨節相連，骸骨與骸骨相接，肉要長在其上。萬膝必向耶和華屈下，萬口必向他承認。」至於不義的人將要處於怎樣的知覺和刑罰中，請聽同樣為此所說的話。其話如下：「蟲是不死的，火是不滅的。那時他們要悔改，卻毫無益處。」至於猶太眾民在看見他帶著榮耀降臨時要說甚麼、行甚麼，曾藉先知撒迦利亞預言，這樣說：「我要吩咐四方的風，聚集那分散的兒女；我要吩咐北方交出來，吩咐南方不可攔阻。那時在耶路撒冷必有大大的哀哭，不是口唇的哀哭，乃是內心的哀哭；他們不撕裂衣服，乃撕裂心腸。他們必族與族相對而哀哭，那時他們要仰望自己所扎的，說：『主啊，你為何使我們偏離你的道呢？我們列祖所稱頌的榮耀，竟成了我們的羞辱。』」
Since, then, we have shown that all the things that have already happened were proclaimed beforehand through the prophets before they came to pass, we must of necessity have faith concerning the things likewise prophesied but yet to happen, that they will surely come to pass. For just as the things already done, though proclaimed beforehand and not understood, did come about, in the same way the things remaining, even if not understood and disbelieved, will come about. For the prophets proclaimed beforehand two comings of his: one, that already past, as of a man without honor and subject to suffering; the other, when it has been proclaimed that he shall come with glory from the heavens with his angelic host, when he shall also raise up the bodies of all men who have lived, and shall clothe the worthy with incorruption, but shall send the unjust, in eternal sensibility together with the wicked demons, into the eternal fire. And that these things too were foretold as about to happen, we will show. It was said through Ezekiel the prophet thus: "Joint shall be brought together to joint, and bone to bone, and flesh shall grow upon them. And every knee shall bend to the Lord, and every tongue shall confess him." And in what sort of sensibility and punishment the unjust are to be, hear what was likewise said to this effect. These are the words: "Their worm shall not cease, and their fire shall not be quenched. And then they shall repent, when it shall profit them nothing." And what the peoples of the Jews are to say and do when they see him coming in glory was prophesied through Zechariah the prophet and spoken thus: "I will charge the four winds to gather the scattered children; I will charge the north to bring them, and the south not to hinder. And then there shall be in Jerusalem a great mourning, not a mourning of mouths or lips, but a mourning of the heart; and they shall not rend their garments, but their minds. Tribe shall mourn against tribe, and then they shall look on him whom they pierced, and shall say: Why, Lord, did you lead us astray from your way? The glory which our fathers blessed has become to us a reproach."
