Do not, then, O brethren, speak any evil against that Crucified One, nor mock at His stripes, by which it is possible for all to be healed, as we too have been healed. For it is good, if, persuaded by the words, you be circumcised of the hard-heartedness which you hold as a disposition not implanted in you by yourselves, since it was given for a sign and not for a work of righteous practice, as the Scriptures compel us to acknowledge.

Consent, then, not to revile the Son of God, nor, being persuaded by Pharisaic teachers, ever to scoff at the King of Israel, such things as your synagogue rulers teach you after the prayer. For if he who touches the things not pleasing to God is as one who touches the apple of God's eye, much more is he who lays hold of His Beloved. And that this is the very One has been sufficiently demonstrated.

And when they were silent, I said: I, my friends, now state the Scriptures as the Seventy expounded them; for, having first stated them as you have them, I was making a test of you, to see how you are now disposed in mind. For when I stated the Scripture which says, 'Woe to them, for they have taken evil counsel against themselves, saying'—as the Seventy expounded it, I added: 'Let us take away the righteous, for he is troublesome to us'; whereas at the beginning of the conversation I had also stated what you wish to be the reading, saying: 'Let us bind the righteous, for he is troublesome to us.'

But you were occupied with other things, and you do not seem to me to have listened attentively to the words. But since the day is now about to come to an end—for the sun is already toward its setting—I will add one thing to what has been said, and then cease. This very thing was indeed stated among the things I have said; but it seems just to me to work it out once more.
