And when those who deliver the mysteries of Mithras say that he was begotten from a rock, and call the place where they initiate those who believe in him a cave—do I not here recognize that they have imitated what was spoken by Daniel, that ‘a Stone was cut out without hands from a great mountain,’ and likewise the words of Isaiah, all of whose sayings they also undertook to imitate? For they contrived to have words of righteous conduct spoken among them too.
I will of necessity recount to you the words of Isaiah which were spoken, so that from them you may know that these things are so. They are these: ‘Hear, you who are far off, what I have done; those who draw near shall know my strength. The lawless in Zion have departed; trembling shall seize the ungodly. Who shall declare to you the eternal place? He who walks in righteousness, speaking the straight way, hating lawlessness and injustice, and keeping his hands clean from bribes, stopping his ears so as not to hear an unjust judgment of blood, shutting his eyes so as not to see injustice—this one shall dwell in the high cave of a strong rock.
Bread shall be given to him, and his water is sure. You shall see a king with glory, and your eyes shall behold from afar. Your soul shall meditate on the fear of the Lord. Where is the scribe? Where are they that take counsel? Where is he that numbers those who are nourished, the small and the great people? With whom they did not take counsel, nor did they know the depths of voices, so that they could not hear: a people brought to nothing, and there is no understanding in him that hears.’
Now that it indeed also speaks in this prophecy concerning the bread which our Christ delivered to us to make in remembrance of his having taken a body for the sake of those who believe in him—for whose sake also he became subject to suffering—and concerning the cup, which he delivered to be made in remembrance of his blood with thanksgiving, is evident. And that we shall behold this same one as a king with glory—this prophecy makes clear.
And that the people foreknown to believe in him were foreknown to meditate on the fear of the Lord—these very words of the prophecy proclaim. And that those who reckon themselves to know the letters of the Scriptures, and who hear the prophecies, have no understanding—these Scriptures likewise cry out. And when, O Trypho, I said, I hear that Perseus was born of a virgin, I understand that the deceiving serpent imitated this too.
