Εἰ δέ τινα ὑπέλθοι καὶ ἡ ἔννοια αὕτη ὅτι, εἰ θεὸν ὡμολογοῦμεν βοηθόν, οὐκ ἄν, ὡς λέγομεν, ὑπὸ ἀδίκων ἐκρατούμεθα καὶ ἐτιμωρούμεθα, καὶ τοῦτο διαλύσω.Ὁ θεὸς τὸν πάντα κόσμον ποιήσας καὶ τὰ ἐπίγεια ἀνθρώποις ὑποτάξας καὶ τὰ οὐράνια στοιχεῖα εἰς αὔξησιν καρπῶν καὶ ὡρῶν μεταβολὰς κοσμήσας καὶ θεῖον τούτοις νόμον τάξας,ἃ καὶ αὐτὰ δι ἀνθρώπους φαίνεται πεποιηκώς, τὴν μὲν τῶν ἀνθρώπων καὶ τῶν ὑπὸ τὸν οὐρανὸν πρόνοιαν ἀγγέλοις, οὓς ἐπὶ τούτοις ἔταξε, παρέδωκεν. Οἱδ ἄγγελοι, παραβάντες τήνδε τὴν τάξιν, γυναικῶν μίξεσιν ἡττήθησαν καὶ παῖδας ἐτέκνωσαν, οἵ εἰσιν οἱ λεγόμενοι δαίμονες. Καὶ προσέτι λοιπὸν τὸ ἀνθρώπειον γένος ἑαυτοῖς ἐδούλωσαν· τὰ μὲν διὰ μαγικῶν γραφῶν, τὰ δὲ διὰ φόβων καὶ τιμωριῶν, ὧν ἐπέφερον, τὸ δὲ διὰ διδαχῆς θυμάτων καὶ θυμιαμάτων καὶ σπονδῶν, ὧν ἐνδεεῖς γεγόνασι μετὰ τὸ πάθεσιν ἐπιθυμιῶν δουλωθῆναι· καὶ εἰς ἀνθρώπους φόνους, πολέμους, μοιχείας, ἀπολασίας καὶ πᾶσαν κακίαν ἔσπειραν. Ὅθεν καὶ ποιηταὶ καὶ μυθολόγοι, ἀγνοοῦντες τοὺς ἀγγέλους καὶ τοὺς ἐξ αὐτῶν γεννηθέντας δαίμονας ταῦτα πρᾶξαι εἰς ἄῤῥενας καὶ θηλείας καὶ πόλεις καὶ ἔθνη, ἅπερ συνέγραψαν, εἰς αὐτὸν τὸν θεὸν καὶ τοὺς ὡς ἀπ αὐτοῦ σπορᾷ γενομένους υἱοὺς καὶ τῶν λεχθέντων ἐκείνου ἀδελφῶν καὶ τέκνων ὁμοίως τῶν ἀπ ἐκείνων, Ποσειδῶνος καὶ Πλούτωνος, ἀνήνεγκαν. Ὀνόματι γὰρ ἕκαστον, ὅπερ ἕκαστος ἑαυτῷ τῶν ἀγγέλων καὶ τοῖς τέκνοις ἔθετο, προσηγόρευσαν
倘若有人生出這樣的念頭，以為我們若承認神為我們的幫助者，就不致如我們所說的被不義之人所制伏、所苦待，這一點我也要解開。神造了全世界，將地上的事物交給人管理，又安排天上的諸體使果實生長、四季更替，並為這些定下神聖的律——這些事顯然也是為人的緣故而造的——祂便將管理世人與天下萬物的職分交給祂所派立管理這些事的眾天使。但眾天使違犯了這所定的秩序，被與婦女交合所勝，生了兒女，就是那些所謂的鬼魔。此外他們又使人類淪為自己的奴僕：一面藉著邪術的文書，一面藉著他們所施加的恐嚇與刑罰，一面藉著教人獻祭、燒香、奠酒——這些是他們在被慾望的情慾所奴役之後變得需要的;他們又在人間撒下兇殺、戰爭、姦淫、放蕩與各樣惡行。因此那些詩人與編造神話的人，不知道乃是眾天使與從他們所生的鬼魔向男女、城邑、邦國行了他們所記載的這些事，便將這些事歸給神自己，並歸給他們所視為由神交合所生的眾子，又歸給那些所謂神的弟兄、以及他們的兒女、並那些兒女的後裔，就是波塞冬與普路托。因為他們是照每一個天使給自己和自己兒女所起的名來稱呼他們的。
And if this thought should occur to anyone, that if we confessed God as our helper, we would not, as we say, be overpowered and afflicted by the unjust, this too I will resolve. God, having made the whole world, and having subjected earthly things to men, and having arranged the heavenly elements for the growth of fruits and the changes of the seasons, and having appointed for these a divine law—which things also he is seen to have made for the sake of men—committed the care of men and of the things under heaven to angels whom he appointed over these. But the angels, transgressing this order, were overcome by intercourse with women and begot children, who are those called demons. And besides, they thereafter enslaved the human race to themselves: partly by magical writings, partly by the fears and punishments they brought, and partly by teaching the offering of sacrifices and incense and libations, of which they became in need after they had been enslaved by the passions of desires; and they sowed among men murders, wars, adulteries, debaucheries, and every vice. Whence also the poets and mythologists, not knowing that it was the angels and the demons begotten of them who did these things to males and females and cities and nations, which they recorded, ascribed them to God himself and to those they regarded as sons begotten of him by procreation, and to those called his brothers, and likewise their children, and the children of those, namely Poseidon and Pluto. For they called each by the name which each of the angels had given to himself and to his children.
