And that the prophetic Spirit might signify to us that he who suffers these things has a generation indescribable and reigns over his enemies, it spoke thus: "Who shall declare his generation? For his life is taken away from the earth; from their lawless deeds he came to death. And I will give the wicked in exchange for his burial and the rich in exchange for his death, because he committed no lawlessness, nor was deceit found in his mouth; and the Lord wills to cleanse him from his stroke. If you make an offering for sin, your soul shall see a long-lived seed. And the Lord wills to take away his soul from toil, to show him light and to form him with understanding, to justify the righteous one who serves many well; and he himself shall bear our sins. Therefore he shall inherit many and shall divide the spoils of the strong, because his soul was delivered to death, and he was reckoned among the lawless, and he himself bore the sins of many, and was delivered up because of their lawless deeds." And how he was also to ascend into heaven, as was prophesied, hear. It was said thus: "Lift up the gates of heaven; be opened, that the King of glory may enter in. Who is this King of glory? The Lord strong and mighty, the Lord powerful." And that he is also to come from the heavens with glory, hear too what was said to this effect through Jeremiah the prophet. These are the words: "Behold, as a son of man he comes upon the clouds of heaven, and his angels with him."
