And Trypho said: "Let Him be acknowledged as Lord and Christ and God for you, who are of the Gentiles, as the Scriptures signify—you who from His name have all come to be called Christians; but we, being worshipers of the God who made this very One, have no need of confessing Him or of worshiping Him."
And I said in reply to this: "O Trypho, if I were as contentious and empty-minded as you, I would no longer continue sharing words with you—with men who are not prepared to understand what is said, but only whet themselves to say something. But now, since I fear the judgment of God, I do not hasten to pronounce concerning any of your race, whether perhaps it may be among those able to be saved by the grace from the Lord of Sabaoth. Therefore, even if you act wickedly, I will continue answering whatever you put forward and object; and I do the same toward simply all men of every race who wish to debate or inquire of me concerning these things."
"That those also of your race who are being saved are saved through this One and are in His portion—if you had paid attention to the things previously stated by me from the Scriptures, you would already have understood, and clearly you would not have asked me about this. But again I will state the things I have previously cited from David, and I beg you to apply yourselves to understanding, not merely to rousing yourselves to act wickedly and to contradict."
"These then are the words which David speaks: 'The Lord has reigned, let the peoples be angry; He who sits upon the Cherubim, let the earth be shaken. The Lord is great in Zion, and is high above all the peoples. Let them confess to Your great name, for it is fearful and holy, and the king's honor loves judgment. You have prepared equity; judgment and righteousness in Jacob You have wrought. Exalt the Lord our God, and worship at the footstool of His feet, for He is holy. Moses and Aaron among His priests, and Samuel among those who call upon His name; they called upon the Lord, and He heard them. In a pillar of cloud He spoke to them, for they kept His testimonies, and the ordinances which He gave them.'"
"And in other passages, these also having been previously related, in the words spoken through David—which you foolishly assert were spoken about Solomon, having been inscribed 'concerning Solomon'—from which it is demonstrated both that they were not spoken about Solomon, and that this One existed even before the sun, and that those of your people who are saved will be saved through Him."
"These are they: 'O God, give Your judgment to the king, and Your righteousness to the king's son; He shall judge Your people in righteousness and Your poor in judgment. Let the mountains take up peace for the people, and the hills righteousness. He shall judge the poor of the people, and shall save the children of the needy, and shall humble the slanderer; and He shall continue with the sun and before the moon, unto generations of generations,' and the rest, down to: 'Before the sun His name endures. And in Him shall all the tribes of the earth be blessed; all the nations shall call Him blessed. Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, who alone does wonders, and blessed be the name of His glory forever and ever; and the whole earth shall be filled with His glory. So be it, so be it.'"
"And recall the other words which I previously said were likewise spoken through David, that it was indicated He was about to come forth from the ends of the heavens and again to ascend to the same places—so that you may recognize Him both as God who came forth from above and as a man who came to be among men, and again as that One who shall come, whom those who pierced Him are destined to see and to mourn."
"These are they: 'The heavens declare the glory of God, and the firmament announces the work of His hands. Day to day pours forth speech, and night to night declares knowledge. There are no utterances nor words whose voices are not heard. Their sound has gone out into all the earth, and their words to the ends of the inhabited world. In the sun He has set His tabernacle, and He, like a bridegroom coming forth from his chamber, will rejoice, mighty as a giant, to run his course. From the end of heaven is His going forth, and His circuit unto the end of heaven, and there is none who shall be hidden from His heat.'"
