And we know that those of the Stoic doctrines, since at least in their teaching on ethics they were orderly, as also were certain of the poets, on account of the seed of the Word implanted in every race of men, were hated and put to death—Heraclitus, as we said before, and Musonius in our own times, and others we know. For, as we have indicated, the demons have always brought it about that all who in any way at all are eager to live according to reason and to flee vice should be hated. And it is no wonder if the demons, being convicted, bring it about that those who follow not a part of the seminal word, but the knowledge and contemplation of the whole Word, which is Christ, are hated much more; who will receive their due chastisement and punishment, shut up in eternal fire. For if even now they are overcome by men through the name of Jesus Christ, this is an indication of the chastisement in eternal fire that is to come both upon them and upon those who serve them. For thus all the prophets foretold it would come about, and Jesus our teacher taught it.
