[Καὶ τοῦ ἐν τῷ ἐμῷ ἔθνει ἀσεβοῦς καὶ πλάνου σιμωνιανοῦ διδάγματος κατεφρόνησα.] Ἐὰν δὲ ὑμεῖς τοῦτο προγράψητε, ἡμεῖς τοῖς πᾶσι φανερὸν ποιήσαιμεν, ἵνα εἰ δύναιντο μεταθῶνται· τούτου γε μόνου χάριν τούσδε τοὺς λόγους συνετάξαμεν. Οὐκ ἔστι δὲ ἡμῶν τὰ διδάγματα κατὰ κρίσιν σώφρονα αἰσχρά, ἀλλὰ πάσης μὲν φιλοσοφίας ἀνθρωπείου ὑπέρτερα· εἰ δὲ μή, κἂν σωταδείοις καὶ φιλαινιδείοις καὶ ἀρχεστρατείοις καὶ ἐπικουρείοις καὶ τοῖς ἄλλοις τοῖς τοιούτοις ποιητικοῖς διδάγμασιν οὐχ ὅμοια, οἷς ἐντυγχάνειν πᾶσι, καὶ λεγομένοις καὶ γεγραμμένοις, συγκεχώρηται. Καὶ παυσόμεθα λοιπόν, ὅσον ἐφ ἡμῖν ἦν πράξαντες, καὶ προσεπευξάμενοι τῆς ἀληθείας καταξιωθῆναι τοὺς πάντη πάντας ἀνθρώπους. Εἴη οὖν καὶ ὑμᾶς ἀξίως εὐσεβείας καὶ φιλοσοφίας τὰ δίκαια ὑπὲρ ἑαυτῶν κρῖναι

[And I despised the teaching of Simon, that impious and deceiving man of my own nation.] But if you will prefix this, we will make it plain to all, so that, if they are able, they may change; for this reason alone we composed these discourses. And our teachings are not, according to sound judgment, shameful, but are above all human philosophy; or if not, at least they are not like the teachings of the Sotadeans and the Philaenideans and the Archestrateans and the Epicureans and the other such poetic teachings, which it is permitted to all to encounter, both spoken and written. And we will now cease, having done what was in our power, and having prayed besides that all men everywhere may be counted worthy of the truth. May it be, then, that you also, worthily of piety and philosophy, judge justly on your own behalf.
