Jesus therefore spoke to them again, saying: 'I am the light of the world. He who follows me does not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.' The Pharisees therefore said to him: 'You bear witness of yourself; your witness is not true.' Jesus answered and said to them: 'Even if I bear witness of myself, my witness is true, because I know whence I came and where I go; but you do not know whence I come or where I go. You judge according to the flesh; I judge no one. And if I do judge, my judgment is true, because I am not alone, but I and the Father who sent me. And in your law it is written that the testimony of two men is true (Deut. 17:6; 19:15).
I am one who bears witness of myself, and the Father who sent me bears witness of me.' They therefore said to him: 'Where is your Father?' Jesus answered: 'You neither know me nor my Father. If you knew me, you would perhaps know my Father also.' 'I go away, and you shall seek me, and you shall die in your sin. Where I go, you cannot come.' The Jews therefore said: 'Will he kill himself, because he says: Where I go, you cannot come?' And he said to them: 'You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world. I said therefore to you that you shall die in your sins. For if you do not believe that I am he, you shall die in your sin.'
They therefore said to him: 'Who are you?' Jesus said to them: 'The Beginning, who also speak to you. I have many things to say and to judge concerning you; but he who sent me is true, and the things I have heard from my Father, these I speak in the world.' And they did not understand that he was calling God his Father. Jesus therefore said to them: 'When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you shall know that I am he, and that of myself I do nothing; but as the Father has taught me, these things I speak. And he who sent me is with me, and has not left me alone, because I always do the things that please him.' As he was speaking these things, many believed in him. Jesus therefore said to those Jews who believed in him:
'O Jews, if you abide in my word, you shall truly be my disciples, and you shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free.' They answered him: 'We are Abraham's seed, and have never been in bondage to anyone; how do you say: You shall be free?' Jesus answered them: 'Amen, amen I say to you, that everyone who commits sin is the servant of sin. And the servant does not abide in the house forever; the Son abides forever. If therefore the Son set you free, you shall be free indeed. I know that you are sons of Abraham; but you seek to kill me, because my word has no place in you. I speak what I have seen with the Father; and you do what you have seen with your father.' They answered and said to him: 'Our father is Abraham.' Jesus said to them:
'If you are sons of Abraham, do the works of Abraham. But now you seek to kill me, a man who has spoken to you the truth which I heard from my Father; this Abraham did not do. You do the works of your father.' They therefore said to him: 'We were not born of fornication; we have one Father, God.' Jesus therefore said to them: 'If God were your Father, you would surely love me; for I came forth and came from God; for neither did I come of myself, but he sent me. Why do you not recognize my speech? Because you cannot hear my word. You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you will to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and stood not in the truth, because there is no truth in him.
When he speaks a lie, he speaks of his own, for he is a liar, and the father of it. But because I tell the truth, you do not believe me. Which of you convicts me of sin? If I tell the truth, why do you not believe me? He who is of God hears the words of God. Therefore you do not hear, because you are not of God.' The Jews therefore answered and said to him: 'Do we not say well, that you are a Samaritan and have a demon?' Jesus answered: 'I have no demon, but I honour my Father, and you have dishonoured me. But I do not seek my own glory; there is one who seeks it and judges. Amen I say to you: If anyone keeps my word, he shall never see death.' The Jews therefore said to him:
'Now we know that you have a demon. Abraham is dead, and the prophets, and you say: If anyone keeps my word, he shall never taste death. Are you greater than our father Abraham, who is dead? And the prophets are dead. Whom do you make yourself?' Jesus answered: 'If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing. It is my Father who glorifies me, of whom you say that he is your God. And you have not known him; but I know him. And if I should say that I do not know him, I should be like you, a liar. But I know him, and keep his word. Abraham your father rejoiced to see my day; and he saw it, and was glad.' The Jews therefore said to him:
'You are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham?' Jesus said to them: 'Amen, amen I say to you, before Abraham came to be, I am.' They therefore took up stones to cast at him; but Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple.
