JOHN XII, 20-36. Now there were certain Gentiles among those who had gone up to worship on the feast day. These therefore came to Philip, who was of Bethsaida in Galilee, and asked him, saying: 'Sir, we wish to see Jesus.' Philip came and told Andrew; Andrew again and Philip told Jesus. But Jesus answered them, saying: 'The hour has come that the Son of Man should be glorified. Amen, amen I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falling into the earth dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. He who loves his soul shall lose it; and he who hates his soul in this world keeps it unto life eternal. If anyone serves me, let him follow me.'
'And where I am, there also shall my servant be. If anyone serves me, my Father will honor him. Now my soul is troubled. And what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour. But for this cause I came unto this hour. Father, glorify your name.' There came therefore a voice from heaven: 'I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.' The crowd therefore that stood and heard said that thunder had occurred; others said: 'An angel spoke to him.' Jesus answered and said: 'This voice did not come because of me, but because of you. Now is the judgment of the world; now shall the prince of this world be cast out. And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all things to myself.' Now this he said, signifying by what death he was to die. The crowd answered him:
'We have heard from the law that the Christ remains forever (Ps. 102:4; 116:25; Isa. 40:8; Ezek. 37:23). And how do you say, The Son of Man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of Man?' Jesus therefore said to them: 'Yet a little while the light is among you. Walk while you have the light, lest the darkness overtake you. And he who walks in darkness does not know where he is going. While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may be sons of light.'
