(Matt. 26:36-46; Mark 14:32-42; Luke 22:39-46) Then Jesus came with them into a country place which is called Gethsemani, (John 18:1-2) over the brook Cedron, where there was a garden, into which he entered with his disciples. And Judas also, who betrayed him, knew the place; because Jesus had often resorted thither together with his disciples. And when he was come to the place, he said to his disciples: Sit you here, and pray, that you enter not into temptation, till I go yonder and pray. And taking Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, James and John, he began to grow sorrowful and to be sad. Then he saith to them: My soul is sorrowful even unto death: stay you here, and watch with me.
And he was withdrawn away from them a stone's cast; and kneeling down, he fell upon his face, and prayed that, if it might be, the hour might pass from him, saying: Father, if it be possible: Abba, Father, all things are possible to thee: My Father, if it be possible, let this chalice pass from me: nevertheless not what I will, but what thou wilt. And when he rose up from prayer, he came to his disciples and found them sleeping. And he said to them: Why sleep you? Could you not watch one hour with me? Watch and pray, that you enter not into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak. Again a second time he went and prayed. (Luke 22:43-45) And there appeared to him an angel from heaven, strengthening him.
And being in an agony, he prayed the longer, saying: My Father, if this chalice may not pass away, but I must drink it, thy will be done. And his sweat became as drops of blood trickling down upon the ground. And when he rose up from prayer, he came again to his disciples, and found them sleeping for sorrow. (Mark 14:40) For their eyes were heavy, and they knew not what to answer him. And leaving them, he went again and prayed the third time, saying the same words. Then he cometh to his disciples and saith to them: Sleep ye now, and take your rest. Behold, the hour is at hand; and the Son of man shall be betrayed into the hands of sinners. Rise, let us go: behold, he is at hand that will betray me.
