147:1
MATTH. axi, i-36.
MATTHEW XXIII, 1-36. Then Jesus spoke to the crowds and to his disciples, saying: 'The scribes and Pharisees have sat upon the seat of Moses. All things therefore whatsoever they tell you, observe and do; but do not do according to their works, for they say and do not do. — LUKE XI, 46. They bind heavy and unbearable burdens and lay them on men's shoulders, but with their own finger they will not move them. They do all their works to be seen by men; for they widen their phylacteries and enlarge their fringes, — MARK XII, 37-38, and they like to walk in robes. For they love the first places at suppers and the chief seats in the synagogues, and greetings in the marketplace, and to be called Rabbi by men.'
147:2
— LUC. XI, 43; xx, 46. vobis, Pharisæi,quia diligitis primas cathedras in synagogis, et salutationes in foro. vobis, scribæet Pharisæi, hypocritæ legisperiti, quia tulistis clavem scientiae, et clauditis regnum cœlorum ante homines: vos autem non inlatis, nec introcuntes sinitis intrare.
(And all the people gladly heard him.) 'But you, do not be called Rabbi; for one is your Master, and you are all brothers. And call no man your father upon earth; for one is your Father, who is in heaven. Neither be called masters, for one is your Master, the Christ. He who is greater among you shall be your servant. And whoever exalts himself shall be humbled, and whoever humbles himself shall be exalted. — LUKE XI, 43; XX, 46. Woe to you, Pharisees, because you love the chief seats in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplace. Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, lawyers, because you have taken away the key of knowledge, and you shut the kingdom of heaven before men; for you yourselves do not enter, nor do you allow those who are entering to go in.'
147:3
MARC. XII, 59; Luc. xx, 47.
— MARK XII, 40; LUKE XX, 47. 'Woe to you, Pharisees, hypocrites, who devour the houses of widows under the pretext of long prayer; you shall receive the greater condemnation. Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, who travel over sea and land to make one proselyte; and when he has become one, you make him twice as much a son of Gehenna as yourselves. Woe to you, blind guides, who say: Whoever swears by the temple, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gold of the temple is bound. Fools and blind, for which is greater, the gold or the temple that sanctifies the gold? And: Whoever swears by the altar, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gift that is upon it is bound. Blind, for which is greater, the gift or the altar that sanctifies the gift?'
— Luc. XI, 42.
'He therefore who swears by the altar, swears by it and by all things that are upon it. And he who swears by the temple, swears by it and by him who dwells in it. And he who swears by heaven, swears by the throne of God and by him who sits upon it. — LUKE XI, 42. Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, who tithe mint and dill and cumin and rue and every herb, and have left undone the weightier matters of the law, judgment and mercy, and faith and the love of God; these things you ought to have done, and not to have left those undone. Blind guides, who strain out a gnat but swallow a camel. — LUKE XI, 39-41. Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, who cleanse what is outside of the cup and the dish;'
147:5
At ille ait: Et vobis legisperitis vse:
'but inside you are full of robbery and uncleanness. Blind Pharisee, cleanse first what is inside the cup and the dish, that what is outside may also become clean. Woe to you, because you are like graves that do not appear, and men walking over them do not know it. Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you are like whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful to men, but inside are full of dead men's bones and all filthiness. So also you outwardly appear righteous to men, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.' Answering, one of the lawyers said to him: 'Master, in saying these things you insult us also.' And he said: 'Woe to you lawyers also:'
Serpentes, genimina viperarum, quomodo fugietis a judicio gehennae' Propterea et sapientia Dei dixit:
'who load men with burdens that cannot be borne, and you yourselves do not touch the loads with one finger. Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you build the tombs of the prophets and adorn the monuments of the just, and you say: If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been their partners in the blood of the prophets. Thus you testify against yourselves, that you are the sons of those who killed the prophets. And you, fill up the measure of your fathers. Serpents, brood of vipers, how will you flee from the judgment of Gehenna? Therefore also the wisdom of God said:'
Amen dico vobis, venient hæc omnia super generationem istam.
'I will send to them prophets and apostles and wise men and scribes; and some of them you will kill and crucify, and some of them you will scourge in your synagogues and persecute from city to city: so that upon you may come all the righteous blood that has been shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah, son of Barachiah, whom you killed between the temple and the altar. Amen I say to you, all these things shall come upon this generation.'
