Matthew 8:28-34; 9:1; Mark 5:1-21; Luke 8:26-39. And when he had come across the sea into the region of the Gerasenes, which is opposite Galilee, and when he had come out onto the land, there met him two men possessed with demons, coming out of the tombs, exceedingly fierce, so that no one could pass by that way. For one of them had had demons for a long time, and wore no garment, nor lived in a house, but among the tombs; and no one could any longer bind him even with chains: for though he had often been bound with fetters and chains, he had torn the chains apart and shattered the fetters, and no one could tame him. And always, night and day, he was among the tombs and on the mountains, crying out and cutting himself with stones.
But when he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and worshiped him. And crying out with a loud voice, he said: What have we to do with you, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? Have you come before the time to torment us? For Jesus was saying to him: Come out of the man, you unclean spirit. And he asked him: What is your name? And he said: Legion; for many demons had entered into him. And they begged him not to drive them out of the region, and not to command them to go into the abyss. Now there was, not far from them, a great herd of swine feeding. And the demons begged him, saying: If you cast us out, send us into the herd of swine. And he said to them: Go. And they, coming out, went into the swine:
and with great force the herd, about two thousand, rushed down into the sea, and were drowned in the sea. And those who fed them fled, and told it in the city and in all the country, and what had happened to those who had had the demons. And behold, the whole city went out to meet Jesus; and seeing the man, sitting clothed and in his right mind, from whom the demons had gone out, at his feet, they were afraid. And they begged him to depart from their borders. And as he was getting into the boat, the man from whom the demons had gone out begged that he might be with him. And he did not allow him, but said to him: Go to your house and to your own people, and tell how great things the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you. And he went away, proclaiming in the Decapolis how great things Jesus had done for him; and all marveled.
