138:1
JOAN. ix, 1-34. Quandiu sum in mundo, lux sum mundi.
And passing by, he saw a man blind from birth. And his disciples asked him: 'Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he should be born blind?' Jesus answered: 'Neither did this man sin, nor his parents; but that the works of God might be made manifest in him. I must work the works of him who sent me, while it is day; the night comes when no one can work. As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.' When he had said these things, he spat on the ground and made clay of the spittle, and spread the clay upon his eyes, and said to him: 'Go, and wash in the pool of Siloam,' which is interpreted, Sent. He went therefore and washed, and came seeing. So the neighbours and those who had seen him before, that he was a beggar, said:
138:2
'Is not this he who used to sit and beg?' Some said: 'This is he.' But others said: 'No, but he is like him.' He himself said: 'I am he.' They therefore said to him: 'How were your eyes opened?' He answered: 'That man who is called Jesus made clay and anointed my eyes, and said to me: Go to the pool of Siloam and wash. And I went and washed and I see.' They said to him: 'Where is he?' He said: 'I do not know.' They brought to the Pharisees him who had been blind. Now it was the Sabbath when Jesus made the clay and opened his eyes. Again therefore the Pharisees asked him how he had received his sight. But he said to them: 'He put clay upon my eyes, and I washed, and I see.' Some of the Pharisees therefore said:
Alii dicebant e: Quomouo potest homo peccator hæc signa facere? Et schisma erat in eis.
'This man is not from God, because he does not keep the Sabbath.' Others said: 'How can a sinful man do such signs?' And there was a division among them. They said again to the blind man: 'What do you say of him who opened your eyes?' He said: 'He is a prophet.' The Jews therefore did not believe concerning him, that he had been blind, until they called the parents of him who had received his sight. And they asked them, saying: 'Is this your son, of whom you say that he was born blind? How then does he now see?' His parents answered them and said: 'We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind; but how he now sees, we do not know, or who opened his eyes, we do not know. Ask him; he is of age;
138:4
ipse de se loquatur. Haec dixerunt parentes ejus, quia timebant Judæos.
let him speak for himself.' His parents said these things because they feared the Jews. For the Jews had already agreed that if anyone should confess him to be the Christ, he should be put out of the synagogue. Therefore his parents said: 'He is of age; ask him.' They therefore called again the man who had been blind, and said to him: 'Give glory to God. We know that this man is a sinner.' He therefore said: 'Whether he is a sinner, I do not know; one thing I know, that whereas I was blind, now I see.' They therefore said to him: 'What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?' He answered them: 'I told you already, and you heard; why do you want to hear it again? Do you also want to become his disciples?' They reviled him and said: 'Be you his disciple;
他自己可以說。」他父母說這話,是因為怕猶太人;因為猶太人已經商議定了,若有認耶穌是基督的,要把他趕出會堂。因此他父母說:「他已經成了人,你們問他吧。」他們第二次叫了那從前瞎眼的人來,對他說:「你該將榮耀歸給神,我們知道這人是個罪人。」他說:「他是個罪人不是,我不知道;有一件事我知道,從前我是眼瞎的,如今能看見了。」他們就問他說:「他向你做甚麼?是怎麼開了你的眼睛呢?」他回答說:「我方才告訴你們,你們不聽,為甚麼又要聽呢?難道你們也要作他的門徒嗎?」他們就罵他說:「你是他的門徒;
138:5
Nisi esset hic a Deo, non poterat facerc quidquam. Responderant, et dixerunt ei: In peccato a natus es totus, et tu doces nos ? Et ejecerunt eum foras.
but we are disciples of Moses. We know that God spoke to Moses; but as for this man, we do not know where he is from.' The man answered and said to them: 'Why, in this is the marvel, that you do not know where he is from, and yet he opened my eyes. Now we know that God does not hear sinners; but if anyone is a worshipper of God and does his will, him he hears. Since the world began it has not been heard that anyone opened the eyes of one born blind. If this man were not from God, he could do nothing.' They answered and said to him: 'You were altogether born in sin, and do you teach us?' And they cast him out.
