Bona a et digna et saucta res , et apta prorsus satisque conveniens de sauciis vigiliis nunc dicere , et conferre sermonem , quando ipsa lucubratio geritur a sollicilis et religiosis : nox cæca est , et necessaria caligo corporibus , quæ non solum homines , sed etiam in somno detinet animantes , ut , reparatis b viribus per soporem , possint diurnos labores sustinere vigilanles . Bonus Deus , qui ita prospexit , ita constituit , ut homo exiturus ad opus suum et ad operationem suam usque ad vesperam , haberet vicarium teropus , in quo a laboribus duris et multa fatigatione requiesceret (Psal . CIII , 23). Ergo diem ad opus , noctem fecit ad requiem ;
It is a good and worthy and holy thing, and altogether fitting and quite suitable, now to speak of holy vigils and to bestow a discourse upon them, when this very night-watching is being kept by the careful and the religious. Night is blind, and darkness is necessary for bodies, which it holds fast not only as men but even as living creatures in sleep, so that, their strength being repaired by slumber, they may be able while waking to sustain the day's labours. Good is God, who so provided, so ordained, that man, going forth to his work and to his labour until the evening, should have an alternating time in which he might rest from his hard toils and much weariness (Ps. 103:23). Therefore he made the day for work, the night for rest;
如今來談論神聖的守夜,並就此發表一篇講論,乃是美好、配得、聖潔的事,且全然合宜、十分相稱的——正當這守夜本身由謹慎而虔敬的人在進行之時。黑夜是盲昧的,黑暗對身體是必需的,它不僅將人,連睡眠中的活物也緊緊握住,好使牠們藉睡眠恢復力氣,醒時得以承擔白晝的勞苦。神是良善的,祂如此預備、如此命定,使人出去做工勞碌直到晚上(詩一〇三23),得有一段交替的時間,可從艱苦的勞作與許多的疲乏中歇息。所以祂造白晝為作工,造黑夜為安息;
193:2
and for this, as for all things, we ought to give thanks to him who granted it. But we know that many men, in order either to please their superiors or to gain some private advantage for themselves, set apart a portion of the night for some little work, and reckon it as gain that they were able to labour out of their own sleep. But if in carnal instruments—that is, in things necessary for food and clothing—those who keep watch are not blamed, nay rather are praised; how much more ought we to keep and to love the sacred vigils, so fruitful for spiritual work, fertile in prayers, hymns, and readings, that we may receive a reward from the Lord God?
