174:1
MATTH. XXVII, 19-25; MARC. xv, 11-14; Luc. XXIII, 17-23. XVIII, 40. Erat autem Barabbas latro. Qui erat, propter seditionem quamdam factam in civitate et homicidium, vinctus in carcere. Dicunt omnes; Cruci figatur. Ait illis praeses: Quid enim mali fecit?
(Matt. 27:19-25; Mark 15:11-14; Luke 23:17-23) And as he was sitting in the place of judgment, his wife sent to him, saying: Have thou nothing to do with that just man; for I have suffered many things this day in a dream because of him. But the chief priests and ancients persuaded the people that they should ask Barabbas and make Jesus away. And the governor answering, said to them: Whether will you of the two to be released unto you? But they said: Barabbas. (John 18:40) And Barabbas was a robber, who, for a certain sedition made in the city and for a murder, was cast into prison. Pilate saith to them: What shall I do then with Jesus that is called Christ? They all say: Let him be crucified. The governor said to them: Why, what evil hath he done?
174:2
At illi magis clamabant, dicentes: Cruciligatur, Videns autem Pilatus quia nihil proficeret, sed magis tumultus fieret, accepta aqua, lavit manus coram populo, dicens: Innocens ego sum a sanguine justi hujus: vos videritis. Et respondens universus populus, dixit: Sanguis (ejus) super nos et super filios nostros.
But they cried out the more, saying: Let him be crucified. And Pilate seeing that he prevailed nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, taking water, washed his hands before the people, saying: I am innocent of the blood of this just man; look you to it. And the whole people answering, said: His blood be upon us, and upon our children.
