(Matt. xv, 32-39; Mark viii, 1-10.) And leaving them, in those days, when again there was a great multitude, He called His disciples together and said: I have compassion on the multitude, for behold they have now continued with Me three days, and have nothing to eat; and I will not send them away fasting, lest they faint by the way. And the disciples say to Him: Whence then should we have so many loaves in the desert as to fill so great a multitude? And Jesus said to them: How many loaves have you? And they said: Seven, and a few little fishes. And He commanded the multitude to sit down upon the ground. And taking the seven loaves and the fishes, and giving thanks, He broke and gave to His disciples; and the disciples gave to the people. And they all ate and were filled.
And of the fragments that were left, they took up seven baskets full. And they that did eat were four thousand men, besides children and women; and He sent them away. And immediately going up into the boat with His disciples, He came into the parts of Dalmanutha. (Matt. xvi, 5-12; Mark viii, 14-21.) And when His disciples had come over the strait, they had forgotten to take bread, and they had but one loaf with them in the boat. And He charged them, saying: Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees, and of the leaven of Herod. But they thought within themselves, saying: It is because we have no bread. And Jesus knowing it said: Why think you within yourselves, O you of little faith, that you have no bread?
Do you not yet understand, neither remember? Have you still your heart blinded? Having eyes, see you not? And having ears, hear you not? Neither do you remember, when I broke the five loaves among five thousand, how many baskets full of fragments you took up? They say to Him: Twelve. When also the seven loaves among four thousand, how many baskets of fragments took you up? And they say to Him: Seven. Why do you not understand that it was not concerning bread I said to you, Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees? Then they understood that He said not that they should beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
