MATTH. XXI, 23-32; MARC. xi, 27-33; Luc. xx, 1-8. Et cum venisset in templum, factum est docen e eo populum et evangelizante, accesserunt ad eum principes sacerdotum, et seniores populi, dicentes: In qua potestate hæc facis? Et quis est qui dedit tibi hanc potestatem? Respondens autem Jesus, dix t illis: Interrogabo vos et ego unum sermonem; quem si dixeritis mibi, et ego vobis dicam in qua potestate haec facio. Baptismus Joannis unde erat e coelo, an ex hominibus? At iUi cogitabant intra se, dicentes: Si dixerimus ex bominibus, timemus turbam: omnes enim habebant Joannem sicut prophetam. Et respondentes Jesu, dixerunt: Nescimus. Ait illis et ipse:
耶穌進了聖殿，正教訓百姓、傳福音的時候，祭司長和民間的長老來到他這裡，說：「你仗着甚麼權柄做這些事？給你這權柄的是誰呢？」耶穌回答他們說：「我也要問你們一句話，你們若告訴我，我就告訴你們，我仗着甚麼權柄做這些事。約翰的洗禮是從哪裡來的？是從天上來的，還是從人間來的呢？」他們彼此商議說：「我們若說從人間來，又怕百姓」；因為眾人都以約翰為先知。於是他們回答耶穌說：「我們不知道。」耶穌也對他們說：
And when he had come into the temple, it happened that as he was teaching the people and preaching the gospel, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him, saying: 'By what authority do you do these things? And who is it that gave you this authority?' And Jesus, answering, said to them: 'I also will ask you one word, which if you tell me, I likewise will tell you by what authority I do these things. The baptism of John, whence was it, from heaven or from men?' But they reasoned within themselves, saying: 'If we say, from men, we fear the multitude'; for all held John as a prophet. And answering Jesus, they said: 'We do not know.' He also said to them:

Nec ego dico vobis in qua potestate hæc facio. Quid autem vobis videtur? Homo quidam babebat duos Iilios; et accedens ad primum, dixit: Fili, vade hodie operari in vinea mea. Ille autem respondens, ait: Nolo. Postea autem poenitentia motus, abiit. Accedens autem ad alterum, dixit similiter. At ille respondens ait: Eo, domine, et non ivit. Quis ex duobus fecit voluntatem patris? Dicunt, novissimus. Dicit illis Jesus: Amen dico vobis, quia publicani et meretrices præcedent vos io regno Dei. Venit enim ad vos Joannes in via justitiae, et non credidistis ei: publicani autem et meretrices crediderunt ei: vos autem videntes, nec pœnitentiam habuistis postea, ut crederetis ei.
「我也不告訴你們，我仗着甚麼權柄做這些事。可是你們以為怎樣？有一個人有兩個兒子；他到大兒子那裡，說：『我兒，你今天到葡萄園裡去做工。』他回答說：『我不去。』後來懊悔，就去了。他又到小兒子那裡，照樣說。小兒子回答說：『父啊，我去』，卻不去。這兩個兒子，是哪一個遵行了父親的旨意呢？」他們說：「是末後的那一個。」耶穌說：「我實在告訴你們，稅吏和娼妓倒比你們先進神的國。因為約翰在義路中到你們這裡來，你們卻不信他；稅吏和娼妓倒信了他。你們看見了，後來還是不懊悔去信他。」
'Neither do I tell you by what authority I do these things. But what do you think? A certain man had two sons; and coming to the first, he said: "Son, go work today in my vineyard." But he, answering, said: "I will not." Yet afterward, moved by repentance, he went. And coming to the other, he said likewise. But he, answering, said: "I go, lord," and he went not. Which of the two did the will of his father?' They said: 'The last.' Jesus said to them: 'Amen I say to you, that the publicans and the harlots go before you into the kingdom of God. For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him; but the publicans and harlots believed him; yet you, seeing it, did not repent afterward, that you might believe him.'
